Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 20th July 2025

Last week:

What a great week we have had! The weather allowed all five walks to go ahead. On Wednesday 9PPs, 30SSs and 28FFs explored the streets and tracks around our own suburb.  There was a good turn out on Thursday too with 8 walkers (7 human and 1 canine) completing a local 6km loop.  The Friday walkers tackled British Peak which is located between the Skyline Walkway and Makara.  There were great views, including the snowy Kaikoura range, wet feet - with nine crossings of the North Makara Stream - and a few gentle hills to provide the required exercise.

The walking week ended with our 12th Anniversary Dinner at the Johnsonville Bowling Club.  Good food, cheap drinks, animated conversation, a generous raffle, lots of laughter and an All Blacks victory.  It doesn't get much better than that!  As usual, there was no shortage of people to help with all sorts of tasks, before, during and after the evening, but by far the lion's share of the work was done by Rowena who has been working on preparations for many weeks in the lead-up to the dinner.  My thanks to everyone, but particularly to Rowena, for such an enjoyable evening.

Walk Details for Wednesday 23rd July 2025

This Week's Walks:    There was a good turnout for last week’s walks back at Churton Park.  This coming Wednesday we head to Pukerua Bay for our walks.  The SS’s walk is a reversal of a walk we have done previously.  Thus there are none of the difficult and steep downhill steps that some walkers found difficult in the past.  The FF’s walk is a repeat of a past walk.  The PPs have a new walk.  All walks do have the odd, but not too steep, hill.   The walks will start at 9:20am from the designated starting point.  Although most of the walking is on reasonable surfaces it is still winter and we do recommend good shoes with a bit of grip.

PPs:  A 3.52km loop walk which takes in a short section of the start of the Paekakariki Escarpment Track and then a return via some of the streets of Pukerua Bay.   You can see the walk here.

SSs:  A 5.92km loop which takes in a quiet rural road, a bit of beach and a return via some of the Pukerua Bay streets. You can see the walk here.

FFs:  A 7.86km loop walk, similar to the SS's walk, but taking in a bit more beach and a few additional streets.   You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.

Parking:  Parking is along the frontage of the Pukerua Bay School in Rawhiti Road.  Turn left off SH59 into Teihana Road (at the shops) and then right into Rawhiti Road.  This parking has proved adequate in the past.

Coffee:  We will inform Back Yard CafĂ© in Palmers Garden Centre (Plimmerton) that a number of us will be coming for coffee and or a snack.

Happy walking.

CPCW PHOTOS

On Wednesday walkers had the opportunity to walk around our own "backyard", including part of the new development in Stebbings Valley.  The groups were captured by Rowena Rowe, Mike Drain, Hue Ng and the final photo, provided by Alison Lavin, of her group titled MI6.  I am a little concerned that their cover is well and truly blown!!

Thursday's group was up in numbers which probably reflected the better weather conditions this week.  This photo was provided by Hue Ng.  This group, had they loitered longer and been captured on the Johnsonville Community Centre CCTV, might have been arrested - a very suspicious looking bunch (except for Red, of course)!!  Of course, MI6 (see above) may have been after them.

A hat trick of walks was scored this week with Friday's team led out by Gary Dick into the hills above and beyond Otari, including a grind to the top of British Peak.  Photos of the earlier group have been provided by David Pegram and Wendy Bentley and the later group by Keith Thomas:
