Churton Park Community Walkers
Newsletter June 9th 2024
Last week’s walks.
The Wednesday walkers went along the streets of Silverstream and the parks adjoining the Hutt River. 51 walkers in total – made up of 18 Fast Footers, 23 Steady Steppers and 10 Pleasure Pacers. Thursday saw 6 walkers (plus Red) walk around Khandallah completing a distance of 5.5kms. On Friday 16 walkers left from Ian Galloway Park and proceeded through Northland, Kelburn and the Botanic Gardens.
Last Friday food and drinks.
With all the recent activities and with some regulars away we had a low turnout on Friday. The good news is that there is a new menu which includes Gold Card specials that are available until 5.30pm.

Our Sponsors:
We have a number of sponsors which we list on our Home Page and in our Newsletter. In recognition of the generosity of our sponsors, the committee has decided to also highlight one sponsor each week in our newsletter. This week we have chosen Village Pharmacy as our featured sponsor:

Village Pharmacy has pharmacies in Churton Park, Khandallah and Ngaio. They provide “the best personal and friendly healthy advice” with services including medicine management, health advice and vaccinations. Their retail stores provide a range of pharmacy-only medications; vitamins and supplements; beauty and skincare products; and a range of original and unique gifts, with a convenient gift wrapping service.
CPCW encourage you to support the Village Pharmacy who provide a knowledgeable and professional service to our community. They have supported CPCW generously for some years and CPCW encourages you to support them and to “buy local”.

A reminder about walking arrangements:
After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’. Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group. Please forward these by email.
Finally, just a reminder to swap telephone numbers amongst those with whom you travel to the starting point each week. A handy back-up for any late changes to arrangements.
Reminder: Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.
Walk Details for Wednesday June 12th 2024.
This Week's Walks: This week we are walking fairly local with the walks being around the streets of Khandallah. With the walks that close to Churton Park it should not be a problem to start the walks at 9:15am.
PPs: A 3.86km loop walk all on streets with the odd gentle rise. You can see the walk here
SSs: A 4.82 km loop that is mainly on streets, but does include a reasonable climb on the return. The walk goes down Old Porirua Road which has no footpath. However it is closed to most downhill traffic and generally is only used by the few residents who have residences there. It is an interesting old street not used much since the construction of Ngaio Gorge Road many years ago. Keeping well to the side will keep you all safe if you actually do come across a car. You can see the walk here
FFs: A 6.35km walk that is partly on streets and partly on a bush track and does include a hill or two, but less than the norm for FFs. You can see the walk here on MapoMeter and on Plotaroute here
Parking: The parking for all groups is the Nairnville Park carpark and surrounding streets.
Coffee: Nothing organised for coffee, so walkers can get together with fellow walkers and try out the Khandallah or Johnsonville or Churton Park Cafes.

Thursday's hard core walkers walked around Khandallah and the photos suggest they had some stunning harbour views to enjoy. Thanks to Gillian Mills for these photos.

On Friday, Clint Davis led the group on a 12.8km walk through Wilton, Northland, Kelburn and two ascents of Tinakori/Te Ahumairangi - the usual allocation of ascents required of a Friday walk!
Here are photos of the first group taken by David Pegram. One might wonder what they were eating en route - including Red!

And the hard-core second group who have no need of mod-cons like Porta-Loos - a cave-like hole in the rock is all that is required! (Photo - Bill Gaudie)
