Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 1st December 2024

Last week’s walks.

The highlight of last week was our annual Christmas dinner function held at The Pines.  This year we had a record number of walkers and partners attending – 90 people in total!  Once again, The Pines put on a splendid menu and the bus service was very popular as well.  Our thanks go to everyone who assisted in organising the event.  Photographer Mike Drain has taken a series of photographs.  The link to these photos is available here The photos on this site will be available for a limited period, so please take a look and download any that you would like to keep for yourself asap.

There were no official walks on Wednesday because of the dinner arrangements, but on Thursday four walkers completed a 6.6km local walk using off-road tracks including the track across the bridge to the new playground, the second zigzag track and the Erlestoke track.  On Friday 21 walkers undertook the escarpment walk with ‘a bit extra’.  They walked the track from North to South.

Friday Night Drinks etc:

This coming Friday, 6th December, we return to Sprig and Fern in Tawa for our final social drinks and meal for this year.  The tables are booked from 5pm although several members arrive a little earlier to take advantage of the special menu.  It’s always a grand evening with much convivial discussion.

Finally my thanks to David Pegram who has so efficiently  stood in for me during the past several weeks.

Walk Details for Wednesday 4th December:

This Week’s Walks:  Fairly local this week with all three walks based in Tawa/Linden and with the SSs and FFs utilising Wilf Mexted Reserve.  All walks to start at 9:20am from the designated parking area.

PPs: A 5.09km loop walk taking in some generally flat streets not used on any of our walks before and a couple of other streets that we have walked in the past.  A fairly long walk that can be cut short anywhere along the route.  Walkers should note that the parking is different to the two other groups.  You can see the walk here.

SSs:  A 5.39km loop walk taking in Wilf Mexted Reserve with a return via streets.  A bit of a hill through the Reserve, but nothing too steep after that.  There is a little loop once out of the Reserve that goes around the cul-de-sac at the end of the road, but this can be left out of the walk if walkers are in a hurry to get to the end of the walk.  The track through Wilf Mexted Reserve is a little overgrown with a lot of spring growth, but it is still very easy to follow.  You can see the walk here.

FFs:  A 6.91km loop walk also taking in Wilf Mexted Reserve and then Woodburn Reserve and then a couple of Tawa Streets.  The track through Woodburn Reserve should be the one without blackberry.  You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on  Plotaroute here.

Parking:

PPs:  Turn right off Main Road, Tawa, and into Linden Avenue where there is Public Parking in the curved area about 50m along this street.

SSs and FFs:  Anywhere in Collins Avenue and adjoining streets in the general area of the entrance to Wilf Mexted Reserve. (On the curve of Collins Avenue.)

Coffee:  We have told Gloria Jeans in the Outlet Centre, Tawa, that a number of us will be coming for coffee after our walks.

Enjoy your walks

CPCW Photos

Four walkers headed out in Churton Park for some ups and downs – and, as you will see from the photos provided by Hue Ng, these were not limited to the walking!!  Great to see some adult joy at the new playground!

And on Friday, there were 21 walkers who also did ups and downs, but this time on the Escarpment heading south from Paekākāriki to Pukerua Bay.   A number of the group needed further exercise and continued south from Pukerua Bay, over the Taua Tapu walkway and back to the cars at Plimmerton.  It is apparent that there are some issues with the sanity of some Friday walkers!!  Here are a selection of photos taken by Clint Davis and John Houghton:
