Churton Park Community Walkers
Newsletter 27th July 2025
Last week:
This was another great week of walking. A total of 65 walkers (8 PPs, 33 SSs, 24 FFs) enjoyed fine weather for their walks on Wednesday around Pukerua Bay. Thursday evening was also fine and 7 walkers completed a 5.2km loop around Khandallah. They were stopped on the way home at a police checkpoint and breathalysed, but fortunately Red was in the driving seat and passed without difficulty. Friday was a sparkling winter's day and, after a frosty start - there was frost at the starting point at the beach at Paraparaumu - 25 Friday walkers, walking in two groups in opposite directions, completed a 12km flat loop.
Reminder: The CPCW Christmas Lunch is on Wednesday 3 December at The Pines; mark your diaries now!
Drinks this Friday at the Johnsonville Club from 5.00pm.
At the Anniversary Dinner last week I said that there were many special aspects of our walking group and I invited people to jot down any particular aspect that they valued. The overwhelming response was that what people valued the most was the friendships formed within the group. This was closely followed by the opportunity for challenging and varied exercise. Everything I read about staying healthy in older age stresses the importance of both exercise and social contact, so it is great news that CPCW seems to be providing this for so many people in our community. Below is a complete summary of responses:
Friendship 32
Camaraderie, social, catch-ups, companionship, conversations, meeting new people, laughter, people, social interaction
Fitness 12
Challenge, hills, fresh air
Walking Routes 8
Interesting, variety, exploring

Walk Details for Wednesday 30th July 2025
This Week's Walks: Still reasonably local with all three Wednesday walks in Tawa. Whilst the walks are in areas that we have visited in the past, the three walks include streets we have not used before. The walks will start at 9:20am from the designated starting point. The walks are mainly on footpaths and walkways, but it is still worthwhile wearing good footwear.
PPs: A 4.24km loop walk which is generally flat. Uses footpaths and walkways, but does include a short path in a park. You can see the walk here.
SSs: A 6.22km loop which has a flat area to start with and another to finish, but has a rise or two between. You can see the walk here.
FFs: A 7.37km loop walk similar to the SS walk, but takes in a bit more hill and a couple of additional streets. You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.
Parking: Parking is in the Linden Park carpark that is accessed from Gee Street which is off Main Road, Tawa. This is parking we have used many times before.
Coffee: We will inform Gloria Jeans Café in The Outlet Centre, Tawa, that a number of us will be coming for coffee and or a snack.
Happy walking.

If you can't beat Wellington on a good day, then we must be Best in Universe after this week's weather. It has more than made up for June.
Wednesday's walkers enjoyed the delights of Pukerua Bay. I note that Red has a rival! Thank you to Janet Tyson who captured the PPs and some of the local history:

Images of the SSs are courtesy of Rowena Rowe who describes the walking conditions as "priceless". Rowena commented that if the group had backed up any further they would have disappeared into the Tasman Sea!!

The FFs were snapped in a rare moment of inactivity this week by Gay Hoffman and Keith Thomas:

On Thursday the team headed out in Khandallah in the chill with all layers tightly closed. Thanks to Gillian Mills for this photo.

The week of frosty mornings saw Friday's walkers head out from Paraparaumu Beach on a 12km walk, led by Keith Thomas, which had the distinction of having a total elevation of 42m - surely a new record for a Friday walk!! The earlier of the two groups were caught by Wendy Bentley: Young in heart and in body! Clint Davis captured the later group in a more somber pose. Be sure to check out Clint's other photos on the “Home Page” .

Keith Thomas really stretched the capacities of his wide angle lens to capture this triumphal arch of walkers enjoying their spoils at the end of the walk and Helen Paterson discovered a friend on the walk:

And a couple of cameo shots taken at the dinner. Janet Tyson captured a group entranced by the doorway and Bill Gaudie captured our ever-industrious treasurer searching the floor for lost change!!
