Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter June 23rd 2024

Last week’s walks.

The Wednesday walkers enjoyed a nice morning walking around Linden/Porirua with 7 Pleasure Pacers completing 4.2km, 29 Steady Steppers doing 6.4km and 20 Fast Footers walking 7.3km.  Coffee at Gloria Jeans in Outlet City was enjoyed by many. On Thursday, on a nice evening, the Thursday group of 7 (plus Red) walked from Churton Park to Johnsonville and return for a distance of 5.7km.  The 14 Friday walkers took in the superb scenery in fine weather on a cloudless morning walking the Skyline walkway journeying from Johnsonville to Karori.

Our 11th  Anniversary Dinner – 27 July.

Thanks to all those who have already booked.  As I mentioned last week, arrangements are progressing with the organisation of this special event to be held at the Johnsonville Bowling Club. Please book early as this helps us to finalise everything for the function.  As usual it promises to be a fun night for all.

A Big Thank you.

CPCW are now the proud owners of a data projector which allows us to easily project images at an event such as our upcoming anniversary dinner or a PowerPoint presentation at any meeting, should someone choose.  The group have been extremely fortunate to loan a projector and screen in the past through the good offices of Peter Nalder and Christine Binns.  Peter has very kindly offered CPCW the opportunity to  purchase SeniorNet's projector at a very reasonable price and the committee has accepted his offer.  Peter has made a generous contribution to this purchase for which we are very grateful.  Use of the projector for CPCW events can be arranged through the committee.

A reminder about walking arrangements:

After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’.  Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group.  Please forward these by email.

Finally, just a reminder to swap telephone numbers amongst those with whom you travel to the starting point each week. A handy back-up for any late changes to arrangements.

Reminder:   Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Walk Details for Wednesday June 26th 2024.

This Week's Walks:  This week we are off to one of our regular and favourite areas - Titahi Bay.  We have tried to change the walks a little from what we have walked in the past, but the walks still use some of the streets and tracks we have walked before.  Traffic should not be a major problem and so we will try to start the walks at 9:20am.

PPs:  A 4.93km loop walk all on streets and reasonably flat. You can see the walk here

SSs:  A 6.49km loop on footpaths, tracks and beach (or beach track) with some minor climbs.   You can see the walk here

FFs:  An 8.20km walk that is on streets and tracks and roadway.  Includes some climbs.  You can see the walk here and on Plotaroute here

Parking:  The parking for all groups is in the large carpark on the corner of Main Road and Onepoto Road. (Next to the Rowing Club).

Coffee:  As we are out Porirua way we will have Coffee at Columbus Coffee, Mitre 10 Mega, Porirua. (It is on our way home.)   We will notify them that a good number of us will be calling for coffee.

Photos

Walkers - please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link.  Preferably small size (around 450kb).  It has been great to receive a larger number of photos from PPs and SSs - keep them coming, please!

Thank you to Hue Ng for this photo of Thursday's group who paced along routes between Churton Park and Johnsonville.

After foregoing a Friday walk because of bad weather one week earlier, Friday's walkers this week were treated to a perfect morning to walk from Raroa up to Mt Kaukau and along the Skyline Walkway to Makara Road in Karori.  With the exception of one youthful member of the group - who shepherded the group who were "on their outing from their rest home" (according to her!) - the journey home by bus and train was courtesy of our Gold Cards.  If you consider the healthy benefits that the members of CPCW must be gaining from our walks, we must be quite a liability to MSD by living far too long!  "Lunga vita a tutti noi" for "La dolce vita"!

Thank you to Alison Lavin and John Houghton for the following two photos:

And to Bill Gaudie for the next two photos.  The train conductor had not encountered such a rowdy bunch for a long time!
