Churton Park Community Walkers
Newsletter September 1st 2024
Last week’s walks.
Another month has disappeared into the past! Welcome to spring and some more pleasant weather for all our walks. Last week’s Wednesday walks saw all of us venturing around different parts of Churton Park. We had another good turnout with 6 Pleasure Pacers, 25 Steady Steppers and 24 Fast Footers. Unfortunately, the Thursday evening walk had to be cancelled due to the heavy rain. A most welcome improvement in the weather on Friday meant that 17 walkers could get out on their walk through Percy Reserve and Korokoro.
Friday Night Drinks etc.
This coming Friday, 6th September, we return to Sprig and Fern in Tawa for our regular social drinks and a meal. The tables are booked from 5pm and it’s always a grand evening with much convivial discussion.
Brian Vincent.
Convenor.

A reminder about walking arrangements:
After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’. Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group. Please forward these by email.
Finally, just a reminder to swap telephone numbers amongst those with whom you travel to the starting point each week. A handy back-up for any late changes to arrangements.
Reminder: Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.
Walk Details for Wednesday September 4th 2024.
This Week's Walks: Some may like it, and others may not, but this coming Wednesday’s walks are the Wainui Hill Challenge. We will repeat the walks that we used the last time we visited. (There is a new walk for the PPs only.) The SSs should note that there is an addition that can be incorporated but it requires some organisation within the group. (See the notes under SS’s Walk.) The walks will start at 9:20am from the designated parking. Please note that there is a different starting point for the FFs. The PPs and SSs have the same parking.
PPs: A 4.41km flat walk that takes in the banks of the Waiwhetu Stream and returns using the streets of industrial Gracefield. You can see the walk here
SSs: There is a choice of two walks for the SSs. Firstly, a 5.45km there and back walk starting at the parking in Tunnel Grove, then to the top of Wainui Hill and returning by the same route to the cars. You can see the walk here
The alternative walk requires a prior arrangement with the others to collect the walkers from Pt Howard. You can see this alternative 5.66km walk here
FFs: A 7.91km loop walk taking in the Wainui Hill challenge and heading on via the track to Pt Howard and then back to the cars in Port Road. You can see the walk here on Mapometer and on Plotaroute here
Parking: The parking for both the PPs and the SSs is in Tunnel Grove, a cul-de-sac running off Gracefield Road. Parking for the FFs is at the south-eastern end of Port Road.
Coffee: Coffee is at Columbus Coffee, Mitre 10 Mega, Petone. We have told them that a good number of us will be returning for coffee. They generally cope well with our numbers. (Please note that the monthly walking chedule for September suggests Compass for coffee. However they would struggle with our numbers.)

History of the Churton Park Walking Group - Russell Paterson:
A comment in the last newsletter led to a walker from the past querying the information about the starting date of the walking group. However, the information was correct and is clearly shown in the information below which has been supplied by Bart Jones.
Extract from CP Community Centre Newsletter – 19 July 2013:
**WALKING GROUP**
If you are interested in being in a walking group departing and returning to CPCC, please let me know. I may have someone who is interested in taking the first few walks while a group gets established. Day and time still to be confirmed.
--------------------------------------------------
Extract from CP Community Centre Newsletter – 26 July 2013:
**WALKING GROUP**
A regular walking group will start on Wednesday mornings, departing CPCC at 10.00am, walking for approximately an hour. The first walk will be on Wednesday 31st July and will be run by the lovely Vicky Gilchrist. Vicky has agreed to run the first two walks to get the group established and then you can make collective decisions as a group as to how you would like to run it from then on. Vicky advises to bring sturdy shoes as she may include a little “off road”, a light jacket if the weather looks inclement and a water bottle. Stop back at the Community Centre for a cuppa and chat afterwards.
Website
When you open the website to view your walk have a quick look at the “Home Page” This usually has new images each week showing views from one of our walks.
Cancellation
If the walks are cancelled an email will be sent out as early as possible but definitely before 8:00am.

Photos
Walkers - please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link. Preferably small size (around 450kb). It has been great to receive a larger number of photos from PPs and SSs - keep them coming, please!

Wednesday's walkers headed out in Churton Park. The day provided a respite from the rain and wind that otherwise marked this week. The walks provided opportunities to cross the new bridge crossing Stebbings Stream and explore the new playground in Rochdale Drive. Photos provided by Brian Vincent and Hue Ng show the large groups of SSs and FFs.

Thursday's weather must have been dire as it forced the cancellation of the Thursday walk - an occurrence rarer than the proberbial hen's dentist.

But by Friday the weather had improved enough for two groups to head up and down the hills above and around Percy Reserve and through some magnificent bush. The Korokoro Stream was fast-flowing after the rain earlier in the week. Photos of the two groups are provided by Wendy Bentley and Bill Gaudie. I think there may be a good reason why some of the second group have hands on hats as they stand on the top of Sugarloaf!
