Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 13th October 2024

Last week’s walks.

Sixty walkers ventured around Whitby last Wednesday.  The three groups involved numbered 10 (Pleasure Pacers), 29 (Steady Steppers) and 21 (Fast Footers).  The Thursday walk of 8.2km was from Churton Park to ‘upper’ Johnsonville and return and 6 walkers (plus, as usual, Red) enjoyed the pleasant evening.  Nineteen Friday walkers did a 14.1km hike around Tawa and Takapu, to conclude a busy week of walks.

Our Christmas Function 27th November

This will be held at The Pines once again with a similar menu for the festive season lunch as we enjoyed last year.

The cost of the function is $42 per person.

Over this past year we have built up a good reserve of funds and accordingly we can now fully subsidise the return bus trip on this one occasion. Please note that this subsidy will only apply for this occasion - unless we are again in a position to do so in the future.  Early bookings for the function are welcomed as this assists our planning and schedule for the event.

Please make your payment to CPCW account:

     02-0524-0233091-00

noting your name(s) and in the reference field please write ‘Xmas’ or ‘Xmas& Bus’ if you wish to travel by the bus.

Pick-up and return times will be advised shortly (but will be similar to last year).  We need to know how many will be taking the bus to ensure we book the correct size transport (and also so that we know we have everyone ‘on board’ before departure).

Away Walk 2025 - Methven

"I know that it is very early days, but suitable accommodation for a large group is not that easy to find so I have booked in at the Southern Cross Lodge, Methven, where I have reserved all 25 rooms in the Lodge. I have negotiated a group rate of $135 per night which includes a continental breakfast. Dates are for a four night stay, arriving Wednesday 5 November and departing Sunday 9 November. Mid-Canterbury is a part of the country that CPCW has not been to. It has some glorious scenery and some great walking.

There is no need to get in touch with me at the moment. I will be asking for a small non-refundable deposit towards the end of the year. I will advertise this in the newsletter."

Another fine Wednesday saw many walkers in all three groups out to pace the streets and tracks to explore new parts of Whitby.

I heard a rumour that the Thursday walkers drifted a little off course - was it the wind?? - and ended up completing a rather longer walk than anticipated.  It didn't stop four of the six walkers on Thursday arising on Friday to join the early group of Friday walkers.  You just can't knock a keen CPCW walker down!  These photos were taken by Hue Ng and Gillian Mills.  And just look at what happens when you take a selfie...

Brian Alderson led the two groups of Friday walkers out and about on the streets of Tawa, Linden and Kenepuru and then up into the bush of the Wilf Mexted reserve and the Woodburn Reserve.
