Churton Park Community Walkers
Newsletter September 22nd 2024
Last week’s walks.
Last week we enjoyed a pleasant, but cool, Wednesday for the walks around Maungaraki. There were 3 Pleasure Pacers, 23 Steady Steppers and 20 Fast Footers participating. On Thursday 3 walkers (plus Red) ventured around Churton Park, managing to complete 5.2km. Also on Thursday 20 walkers enjoyed a nice evening in Palmerston North prior to the Frday walk in Manawatu Gorge the next day; however heavy overnight rain and morning showers meant that the walk had to be cancelled.

A reminder about walking arrangements:
After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’. Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group. Please forward these by email.
Finally, just a reminder to swap telephone numbers amongst those with whom you travel to the starting point each week. A handy back-up for any late changes to arrangements.
Reminder: Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.
Walk Details for Wednesday September 25th 2024.
This Week's Walks: Much closer to home for this week's Wednesday walks - all three are within the suburb of Johnsonville. The walks are all ones that we have walked in the past, but in both the case of the PPs and SSs a section where there were no footpaths has now been bypassed. The walks will start at 9:20am from the designated parking area.
PPs: A 4.61km loop walk using the footpaths, pathways and tracks of Johnsonville and sneaking into Broadmeadows. Mainly fairly flat. but when walking in Johnsonville some minor hills can’t be avoided. All on good surfaces. You can see the walk here
SSs: A 5.83km loop walk similar to the PPs but extending a little bit deeper into the adjoining suburbs. All on good surfaces. You can see the walk here
FFs: A 7.75km loop walk which heads around the streets and a couple of tracks in Raroa, Rangoon Heights and Broadmeadows and other parts of Johnsonville. A similar walk to the SSs, but extended and reversed. You can see the walk here on MapoMeter and on Plotaroute here
Parking: The parking for all three groups is in our usual place for these Johnsonville walks; that is in the Alex Moore Park carpark which is accessed from Bannister Avenue.
Coffee: Coffee is Walker's choice: Library, Mall, Thyme, Simmer or wherever. Nothing booked.

Walkers - please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link. Preferably small size (around 450kb). It has been great to receive a larger number of photos from PPs and SSs - keep them coming, please!

Wednesday walks were another journey out to the Hutt. This time it was Maungaraki and the Hutt Jinx was sleeping as the weather was good and the traffic was obliging. Photos of the PPs, SSs and FFs have been provided this week by Mike Drain, Paul Alpe and Bill Gaudie respectively. Please note the orderly manner in which the FFs are walking down the hill in pairs; just like junior (and obedient!) primary school pupils!!

The bush walk along and above the old Manawatu Gorge Road was planned for Friday, but the weather did not oblige and the walk was cancelled.
