Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter August 25th 2024

A Word from our Convenor:

Last week’s walks:

A combination of nice weather, great company and superb views over Wellington Harbour saw 66 walkers out and about last Wednesday enjoying the walks in Newlands. This included 26 Fast Footers, 35 Steady Steppers and 5 Pleasure Pacers. It was somewhat windier for the Thursday evening walkers - five members walked from Churton Park to Johnsonville and return.  On Friday 16 walkers ventured out to Tunnel Gully for their 15 km walk.

A reminder about walking arrangements:

After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’.  Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group.  Please forward these by email.

Finally, just a reminder to swap telephone numbers amongst those with whom you travel to the starting point each week. A handy back-up for any late changes to arrangements.

Reminder:   Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Walk Details for Wednesday August 28th 2024.

This Week's Walks:  In the very early days of the walking group the walks were almost totally within Churton park.  For this coming Wednesday all three walks return home - Churton Park is a much larger suburb than it was when the group formed 11 years ago.  Hopefully these local walks will get you out to see a part of the suburb you may not have walked through before.  As we are starting the walks in the carpark of the Churton Park Village the start times of the walks will return to 9:00am for this week only.

PPs:  A 4.37km walk taking in the walkways, tracks and footpaths of Churton Park.  Churton Park is a reasonably hilly suburb, as we all well know, so expect the odd climb. You can see the walk here

SSs:  A 6.18km loop around the streets and tracks of Churton Park. It takes in the new play area and the bridge that has been closed off for months - now open! You can see the walk here

FFs:   A 7.39km loop walk taking in the streets, walkways and hills of Churton Park.  You can see the walk here on Mapometer and on Plotaroute here

Parking:  With all walks starting in Churton Park Village the parking suggested is in the south-eastern corner of the carpark.  This leaves parking nearer to the Supermarket for shoppers and keeps us on side with our sponsors!

Coffee:  We have told Simmer that a number of us will be returning for coffee.  They generally keep the outside tables clear for us.

Photos

Walkers - please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link.  Preferably small size (around 450kb).  It has been great to receive a larger number of photos from PPs and SSs - keep them coming, please!

It was great to see so many people out on Wednesday for the opportunity to enjoy some great walks around Newlands.  A stunning day and magnificent views.

Thanks to Hue Ng for her photo of the Thursday walkers who paced the streets between Churton Park and Johnsonville, admiring spring's bounty along the way:

Despite a forecast for slightly unpredictable weather, 16 Friday walkers headed out and about in the region of Tunnel Gully on a 15km walk.  Thanks to Wendy Bentley for this photo of the earlier group.  The later group were not feeling at their photogenic best and declined to be photographed!
