Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter August 11th 2024

A Word from our Convenor:

Last week’s walks:

We had a really great turn-out last Wednesday for the walks around Paremata, no doubt due to both the fine weather and the interesting walks! Sixty-one walkers took part – 22 Fast Footers, 25 Steady Steppers and 14 Pleasure Pacers.  Six walkers plus Red walked in Tawa on Thursday evening.  However, with wet conditions ending the week we had to cancel the Friday walk.

A welcome to recent new members:

We have welcomed two new members in the past few weeks.  Paul Maloney walks with the Wednesday Fast Footers and Jennie Thompson walks on Thursday evenings.  Welcome to you both - I am sure you will enjoy the upcoming walks.

A reminder about walking arrangements:

After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’.  Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group.  Please forward these by email.

Finally, just a reminder to swap telephone numbers amongst those with whom you travel to the starting point each week. A handy back-up for any late changes to arrangements.

Reminder:   Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Walk Details for Wednesday August 14th 2024.

This Week's Walks:  Maidstone, Upper Hutt, is the venue for this coming Wednesday’s walks.  The walks for the SSs and the FFs include a climb on a good quality gravelled track to a ridge that allows for great views over Whitemans Valley and also over Upper Hutt.  The rest of the SS's walk is on footpaths.  The walks of all three groups require crossing a couple of main residential roads.  Look out for crossings and use these to ensure safe travel across the busy roads.  There are pedestrian crossings at appropriate places for all walks.  All walks start from the parking area at 9:20am - this time probably requires a slightly earlier departure time from home for all walkers.  (A set starting time for the walks has been made at the request of walkers.)

PPs:  A 3.62km loop taking in the park, Brewtown, the main shopping street of Upper Hutt and a couple of residential and industrial streets. You can see the walk here  Take care crossing the streets.

SSs:  A 5.43km loop taking in a climb to the ridge with the rest either downhill or flat.  Take your time on the climb - the view at the top is worth the effort. The walk includes a stroll down Main Street!  Take care in crossing the busier streets - there are crossings available.  You can see the walk here

FFs:  A 6.93km loop walk.  Similar to the SS’s, but it takes in another track and a couple of additional streets. You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.

Parking:  The parking for all three groups is within the Maidstone Park car parking area adjacent to the Hockey Fields and opposite Mitre 10 Mega Upper Hutt.  The checks on the parking suggest there is more than enough parking for all.

Coffee:  The venue for coffee is your choice.  There is a Columbus Coffee within Mitre 10 Mega, Upper Hutt, and others on the way home, but within Upper Hutt.  We have not warned any of these that we may be coming.

Photos

Walkers - please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link.  Preferably small size (around 450kb).  It has been great to receive a larger number of photos from PPs and SSs - keep them coming, please!

On Wednesday, there was a large turnout of walkers on a lovely winter's day to enjoy paths/tracks/roads around Plimmerton and Camborne.  The FFs and some of the PPs were recorded for posterity by Hue Ng and Mike Drain respectively.  I believe there was a large group of SSs, but in the absence of photographic evidence I must presume that it was "fake news"!

Gillian Mills has captured great shots of the Thursday walkers who headed out and about in Tawa.  Poor Red seems at a bit of a loss at the antics of those who should know better!!

And the weather had it in for Friday's walks this week once again.  I am a little suspicious that the convenor of these last two walks wanted to stay at home in the warm and catch up on recorded footage of the Olympics...

"Dad Jokes" from the Olympics:

Winston: Why can’t tomatoes win races against lettuces at the Summer Games?
Shane: Tell me.
Winston: Because the lettuces are always a head, and the tomatoes are always trying to ketchup!

A book never written: “The Marathon” by Will E. Makit.

Chris:  What is the best part of an Olympic boxer’s joke?
Nicola: Tell me.
Chris: The punch line.

Chris:  Why did the spotted cat get disqualified from the Olympics?
Carmel:  Why?
Chris:  It was a cheetah.

Marama:  Why were the swimming elephants thrown out of the Olympics?
Chloe:  I haven’t a clue.
Marama:  Because they couldn’t keep their trunks up!

Debbie:  Why does Cinderella never win the Olympics?
Rawiri:  Why?
Debbie:  She has a pumpkin for a coach and runs away from the ball.
