Churton Park Community Walkers
Newsletter July 7th 2024
Sprig and Fern, 5th July.
There was a very good crowd at Sprig and Fern last Friday.
Last week’s walks.
The Wednesday walkers enjoyed walks of various distances and then returned to their parked cars by train. A number of the Steady Steppers paused for a coffee at Crofton Downs before catching the next available train. There were 2 Pleasure Pacers, 31 Steady Steppers and 20 Fast Footers. On a chilly evening on Thursday there were 5 walkers undertaking a local walk around Churton Park. Friday saw a good group of walkers, 23 in total, complete a walk that involved going up Mt Kau Kau.
Our 11th Anniversary Dinner – 27th July.
Prizes from our sponsors are beginning to arrive and a couple of different activities are being planned for our anniversary function at the Johnsonville Bowling Club. As I mentioned last week, it promises to be a fun night for all.

Our Sponsors:
We have several sponsors which we list on our Home Page and in our Newsletter. In recognition of the generosity of our sponsors, the committee wish to highlight a sponsor each week in our newsletter.
This week we have chosen New World Churton Park as our featured sponsor:

New World Churton Park have been generous supporters of CPCW for many years and we are very grateful for their continuing support of our group. Our local supermarket, New World Churton Park, offers a full range of groceries, fruit and vegetables, bakery, deli, meat/fruit and wine/beer. Locally owned, they are the heart of our Churton Park Village.
New World Churton Park, 69 Lakewood Avenue, Churton Park
Mon – Sun: 7.00am to 10.00pm
Phone: 04 478 0270
A reminder about walking arrangements:
After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’. Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group. Please forward these by email.
Finally, just a reminder to swap telephone numbers amongst those with whom you travel to the starting point each week. A handy back-up for any late changes to arrangements.
Reminder: Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.
Notice:

Walk Details for Wednesday July 10th 2024.
This Weeks Walks: The schedule said that this coming Wednesday’s walks were to be in Upper Hutt. Unfortunately the required reconnaissance has not yet been undertaken and so we are now to be walking in Karori. This also fits with school holidays and less traffic on the city roads. All walkers should be at the start point ready to start walking at 9:20am.
PPs: A 4.01 km loop walk around the streets of Karori. Generally flat, but a couple of gentle rises in parts. You can see the walk here
SSs: A 5.46 km loop walk taking in the streets of Karori on both sides of Karori Road. Generally flat on one side of the main road and not so flat on the other. You can see the walk here
FF’s: A 5.91 km loop walk taking in the streets mainly on the east side of Karori Road and also taking in a section of bush track. There are some climbs. You can see the walk here and on Plotaroute here
Parking: The parking for all three groups is in Samuel Parnell Road and adjoining streets. (We have used this parking location several times before.) Turn right off Karori Road into Parkvale Road and Samuel Parnell Road will be on your left.
Coffee: We will let Karori Park Café know that quite a few of us will be coming for coffee. There are quite a few alternatives, including Simmer on your way home.

Wednesday's adventure followed parts of the Johnsonville railway line. Walkers from the SS/PP groups started at Raroa Park and ventured south as far as Crofton Downs, before enjoying coffee and then taking the train back to Raroa. Members of the FF group parked at Nairnville Park and walked through Ngaio, Crofton Downs, Wadestown and Thorndon before just missing the 10.32 train to Johnsonville. However, coffee at the railway station occupied them before the next train delivered them safely to Simla Crescent. Photos of the SSs and FFs were taken by Paul Alpe and Bill Gaudie respectively.

And on Friday, Gary Dick took the groups up and over Mt Kaukau and then around and about Mt Kaukau and then up and over and around and down and around Mt Kaukau. In other words - a typical Gary Walk!
Thanks to Gay Hoffman for her photo of the second group.

Seen on a footpath blackboard:
"I tried out a chemistry joke on the audience...
It got a bad reaction."
(Yes, I know! It is a Dad Joke!)
