On Thursday 5 walkers (plus Red) undertook a walk around Johnsonville and on Friday 20 walkers went from the Wellington Railway Station around Mt Victoria, Hataitai and Kilbirnie.
Our 11th Anniversary Dinner – 27th July.
The final number of attendees (currently 74) will be forwarded for catering purposes on Tuesday. Then we have the set up arrangements from 2pm on Saturday before the function commences at 6pm at the Johnsonville Bowling Club. Please remember to bring some cash for the raffles and the games. We have received a good number of excellent prizes from our sponsors. It promises to be another exciting evening!
Brian Vincent
Convenor
Our Convenor, Brian, has been busy preparing for the anniversary dinner and, together with a number of other CPCW members, has been using his powers of persuasion to obtain some great raffle prizes. Here he is at New World Churton Park - this photo is currently starring on the New World Facebook page:

A reminder about walking arrangements:
After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’. Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group. Please forward these by email.
Finally, just a reminder to swap telephone numbers amongst those with whom you travel to the starting point each week. A handy back-up for any late changes to arrangements.
Reminder: Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Walking Tracks in and around Churton Park
Guest talk by Bradley Schroder and Tim Harkness
7:30 pm, 30th July 2024, Churton Park Community Centre
Dr Bradley Schroder, Open Spaces and Parks Manager for Wellington City Council, and Tim Harkness, Wellington City Council Trails and Reserve Specialist, have agreed to give a guest talk at the Churton Park Community Centre (Kea Hall) from 7:30 pm on Tuesday 30th July.
Their topic is 'Walking tracks in and around Churton Park'. The talk is open to all and free of charge.
This is a good opportunity to learn more about some walking tracks that you may know and about others that you have not yet explored. What is their significance and how do they fit in the larger plan of encouraging us all to get out and explore our special backyard? There's one way to find out. Come along on 30th July and hear for yourself.

Walk Details for Wednesday July 24th 2024.
This Week's Walks: We hope that those who trusted the weather forecast rather than their view out of their window, enjoyed their walk around Evans Bay etc last Wednesday. The walks were carried out in surprisingly good weather - a good call by Brian, our Convenor. This week we have eliminated the hills with three walks around the streets, parks and a golf course, all in Petone. All walkers should be at the start point ready to start walking at 9:20am.
PPs: A 4.78 km loop walk around the streets, seaside track and a stream bank, all within the suburb of Petone. All very flat. You can see the walk here
SSs: A 6.25 km loop walk around the streets, a stream bank and a golf course. Also all very flat. You can see the walk here
FFs: A 7.78 km loop walk taking in the streets, river banks and a golf course all within Petone. No hills this week; enjoy the week off from hills. You can see the walk here and on Plotaroute here
Parking: The parking for all three groups is on Marine Parade. Continue along Petone Esplanade and take a right turn into Kirkcaldy Street (just before Gull Petrol Station) and then left into Marine Parade and find a park about halfway along this street. There is a separate right turning lane for the turn into Kirkcaldy Street. (We have used this parking location several times before.) Generally there is no problem with the parking in this area but we do end up a little spread out. If you can see some of your same walking group and can park near them, then all the better.
Coffee: We have told Columbus Coffee at Mitre 10 Mega, Petone, that a number of us will be coming there for coffee.

On Friday, Keith Thomas led the groups into town on the #1 bus and then they walked from Wellington Railway Station and around the harbour to the eastern end of Oriental Bay. From here they climbed up and down in Roseneath, around Evans Bay, up and down through Kilbirnie and Melrose (including an ascent up the dreaded Rodrigo Road - Wellington's answer to Baldwin Street!), then back through the town belt for refreshments and recovery in the city and a journey home on the bus. An adventure worthy of the Famous Five and Secret Seven altogether, especially as parts of the walk were undertaken under cover of a thick fog...
The first group of two photos were taken by Hue Ng; the second group of two photos are from Wendy Bentley; and the third group is from Keith Thomas (please note the inclusion of the Rodrigo Road sign!):
