Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter September 8th 2024

Last week’s walks.

Unfortunately, the weather did not come to the party and Wednesday's Wainui Challenge was cancelled.  These walks will take place this coming Wednesday instead - hopefully we won't miss out this time!  Thursday's team turned out in force with 8 walkers (and Red) heading out on a loop around Johnsonville.   A total of 22 walkers in two groups headed out on Mt Victoria on Friday.

Diary Notes for Upcoming Social Events:

Wednesday November 27th 2024 - CPCW Christmas Lunch at The Pines; bus transport from Churton Park will be organised again.

Saturday July 19th 2025 - CPCW Anniversary Dinner at Johnsonville Bowling Club

Further details will be sent out closer to these events, but mark your diaries now.

A reminder about walking arrangements:

After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’.  Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group.  Please forward these by email.

Finally, just a reminder to swap telephone numbers amongst those with whom you travel to the starting point each week. A handy back-up for any late changes to arrangements.

Reminder:   Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Walk Details for Wednesday September 11th 2024.

This Week's Walks:  Last Wednesday’s walks were cancelled.  We have decided to repeat these walks this coming Wednesday.  (The walks shown on the schedule for the coming Wednesday will probably have been affected by last week's weather and are better left for another day.  The schedule for September has been updated.).

So, for better or worse, this coming Wednesday’s walks are the Wainui Hill Challenge.  We will repeat the SS’s walk that we used the last time we visited.  There is a new walk for the PPs only, but the FF’s walk has been reversed.) The SSs should note that there is an addition that can be incorporated but requires some organisation within the group.  (See the notes under SSs Walk.). The walks will start at 9:20am from the designated parking area.  Please note that there is a different starting point for the FFs.  The PPs and SSs have the same parking area.

PPs:  A 4.41km flat walk that takes in the banks of the Waiwhetu Stream and returns using the industrial streets of Gracefield.  You can see the walk here

SSs:  There is a choice of two walks for the SSs.  Firstly, a 5.45km there and back walk starting at the parking in Tunnel Grove, then to the top of Wainui Hill, and returning by the same route to the parking.  You can see the walk  here

The alternative walk requires prior organisation with others to collect the walkers from Pt Howard.  You can see this alternative walk, which is 5.66km in length, here

FFs:   A 7.69km loop walk around to Pt Howard, up through the bush on tracks to the top of the Wainui Hill and then back down the hill and around to the cars in Port Road.    You can see the walk here on MapoMeter and on Plotaroute here

Parking:   The parking for both the PPs and the SSs is in Tunnel Grove, a cul-de-sac running off Gracefield Road.  Parking for the FFs is at the south-east end of Port Road.

Coffee:   Coffee will be at Columbus Coffee, Mitre 10 Mega, Petone.  We have told them that a good number of us will be returning for coffee.  They generally cope well with our numbers.  (Please note that the monthly walking schedule for September lists Compass for coffee.  However, they would be unable to cope with our numbers.)

Photos

Walkers - please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link.  Preferably small size (around 450kb).  It has been great to receive a larger number of photos from PPs and SSs - keep them coming, please!

No Wednesday walks = No photos. 🙁

But by Thursday the weather had improved and the group got out in Johnsonville for a loop walk.  This photo of the CanCan girls is courtesy of Hue Ng.  As usual, Red is looking bemused!

And Keith Thomas organised a stunning, sunny day for the Friday walks up and down and round and round Mt Victoria.  Something like 12km of arounds and maybe 500m of ups/downs - depends on whose App you believe!!  The walk included the Anne Frank Memorial and the Gifford Observatory.  Along the way there was also an opportunity for diversionary activity - 6 years of age is the new 70+!!   Photos of the two groups have been provided this week by Pauline Moore and Gay Hoffman.
