Staying Safe Online:
As we head rapidly towards the Christmas period, just a reminder to be aware of the multitude of scams around. There have been some emails purporting to come from CPCW members along the lines of:
URGENT TASK:
Hi X
Do you have a moment? I am tied up in a meeting and there is something I need you to help me take care of.
Thanks.
These are scam emails. Also, much more enticing are those emails indicating that you have a parcel from a courier - a reminder to check the email address and avoiding clicking on any links in these emails. Maybe take a look at Netsafe's guidelines for older people (yes, I know, none of us want to think we are "older people"!!) - this link is OK.

A FINAL REMINDER:
Away Walk - Methven November 5th to November 9th 2025:
|
|
The away walk for 2025 is to Methven for four nights, arriving Wednesday November 5th and departing Sunday November 9th. Mid-Canterbury is a part of the country that CPCW has not visited previously. There are great walking opportunities near Methven: in the Canterbury foothills, a number of small bush reserves, at Lake Coleridge and in the Rakaia Gorge. We have reserved all 25 rooms in the lodge at the Southern Cross Lodge which also has a dining room where we can meet. The rooms are ensuite and the rate is $135 per day which includes a continental breakfast. The rooms can either be configured as double or twin.
When we have been to the South Island in past years, many people have chosen to take their own vehicle. For those not wishing to do this, flying to Christchurch and hiring a vehicle might be an economical option. Methven is 96km from the airport and Google says this is a 1hr 18min drive.
For trampers, Arthurs Pass National Park is nearby. I am suggesting Mingha - Deception. This is a one night/two day tramp, but staying for two nights at Goat Pass Hut would give the opportunity to walk/scramble up to Lake Mavis on the day in between. It is an ambitious tramp so we might decide on something less adventurous, depending on who is interested, as there are lots of other choices in Arthurs Pass.
A deposit of $50 per person is due by 31st December 2024.
Please pay to the CPCW account (02-0524-0233091-00) with your name and ‘Methven’ in the reference field. At the same time can you please send me an email to let me know you have paid - David.Pegram.nz@gmail.com I am happy to answer any questions - either in person or by email.

Walk Details for Wednesday 18th December:
This Week's Walks: Back to a handy local area this week with walking in Ngaio and a bit of Khandallah. This is the last walk for the year with the first walk for the New Year taking place on Wednesday 8th of January 2025. Details of this first walk for the New Year will be sent out in January.
All walks are to start at 9:20am from the parking area.
PPs: A 3.46km loop with only a few minor hills taking in the footpaths and alleyways of Ngaio. A few steps are included but not worth counting. You can see the walk here
SSs: A 4.24km loop walk that does include some small hills. You can see the walk here
FFs: A 6.83km loop walk that includes bush tracks and streets of the Ngaio area. You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here
Parking: PPs and SSs are parking in the Nairnville Park carpark.
Parking for the FFs is the north-western end of Spencer Street. This is a new parking area we found recently with plenty of kerbside parking as most of the houses are accessed from another street.
Coffee: Nothing booked or organised, but there are three or four to choose on the way home and others back at Churton Park.
Enjoy your walks
Russell Paterson

No news from the Thursday walkers this week. The pre-Christmas rush must have kept them otherwise occupied.
