Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 27th October 2024

Last week’s walks.

In spite of traffic problems in Churton Park, which delayed some walkers, there was still a good turn out for the Wednesday walks in Eastbourne, with 6PP, 31SS and 19FF. We were pleased to welcome Jennie Thompson on her first Wednesday walk and hope to see her in the future as a regular member of the group. There were 5 walkers on the Thursday evening walk in Newlands. Plans for the Friday walk were changed due to the weather, as attempting the Skyline Walkway while 40 flights were cancelled at Wellington Airport due to high winds did not seem a smart idea. Instead 15 walkers defied the weather gods and had a dry and calm walk in Otari-Wilton's Bush.

Next Friday 1st November:

This coming Friday sees us return to Sprig and Fern Tawa for our monthly get-together over some food and drinks.  Tables are reserved from 5pm and for those who wish to order early there is the Gold Card special menu available up to 5.30pm.  See you there.

Deputy Convenor

NOTICE:

The First Aid kits are due for an annual check prior to our away trip in the Wairarapa.  If anyone is holding a CPCW kit, please contact Jane on jegaudienz@gmail.com and she will arrange collection, a check and reprovision, and then return the kits.

Thank you

And a reminder to make your payment to secure your place at our 2024 Christmas Function

Wednesday November 27th

This will be held at The Pines once again with a similar menu for the festive season lunch as we enjoyed last year.

The cost of the function is $42 per person.

Over this past year we have built up a good reserve of funds and accordingly we can now fully subsidise the return bus trip on this one occasion. Please note that this subsidy will only apply for this occasion - unless we are again in a position to do so in the future.  Early bookings for the function are welcomed as this assists our planning and schedule for the event.

Please make your payment to CPCW account:

     02-0524-0233091-00

noting your name(s) and in the reference field please write ‘Xmas’ or ‘Xmas& Bus’ if you wish to travel by the bus.

Pick-up and return times will be advised shortly (but will be similar to last year).  We need to know how many will be taking the bus to ensure we book the correct size transport (and also so that we know we have everyone ‘on board’ before departure).

Walk Details for Wednesday 30th October 2024

This Week's Walks:   Back to Khandallah for this week's Wednesday’s walks.  Again this week we have sorted out both a flattish walk and one with some hills for the SSs.  SSs can make the choice on the day.  All walks to start at 9:20am from the designated parking.

PPs:  A 4.07km loop that has a bit of a small uphill climb in the bush on a track that leads from Simla Crescent, with the rest of the walk being around the suburb’s streets and generally flat.  You can see the walk here

SSs:  Hill Choice -  A 5.37km loop that includes a bit of a bush walk, a stroll down Old Porirua Road and a climb up the Bridle Track.  The track through the bush requires a bit of care.  Most walkers will know this bush track from previous walks. You can see the walk here

SS:  Flat Choice -  A 6.52km loop walk around the suburban streets of Khandallah and a little bit of Ngaio.  There are no real hills of note, only a couple of gentle rises.  You can see the walk here

FFs:   A 6.89km loop walk that covers the flatter areas at the level of the parking but heads down to the lower parts of Khandallah as well.  You can see the walk here on MapoMeter and on Plotaroute here

Parking:  The parking for all three groups is in the Nairnville Park carpark plus the surrounding streets.

Coffee:  It is walker's choice for coffee as there is no one café in the area that can deal with the size of our group.  So walkers can pick and choose from a couple of cafés in Khandallah, a couple in Ngaio, a couple in Johnsonville and there are always Simmer and Thyme back home in Churton Park.

CPCW Wednesday organising committee tempted fate with a walk out in the Hutt this week.  The last two attempts were stymied by traffic woes and it looked like this one would be as well.  Fortunately, once leaving the snarled traffic of Johnsonville/Churton Park - and who knows what was behind this! - the traffic flowed freely out to Eastbourne.  There was a total of 56 walkers who trod the streets of Eastbourne and the hill above.  Walkers adjourned to the café at Williams Park in Days Bay where the whole group were easily accommodated and service was swift and with a smile.

This week's Friday walk had originally included parts of the Skyline Walkway.  However, given the gale-force winds, Clint Davis plotted an alternative in Otari Bush which provided a walk which was sheltered and dry, but not without some steep climbs to test the group members.  15 walkers headed out in defiance of the weather!
