Churton Park Community Walkers
Newsletter June 2nd 2024
Last week’s walks.
The Wednesday walkers enjoyed various local walks around Churton Park last week. A total of 45 walkers ventured forth - 6 PPs, 20 SSs and 19 FFs. On Thursday 7 walkers completed 5.9km from Churton Park to Johnsonville and return and on Friday 15 walkers did a route up to the Belmont Trig Loop with a Maungaraki warm-up.
Friday food and drinks.
This coming Friday we have our monthly drinks and meal (and some hearty chatting) at Sprig and Fern, Tawa. We have the tables reserved from 5pm.
Walking Tracks in Churton Park
The Churton Park Community Association has advised us of a meeting being held to discuss the walking tracks around Churton Park. It is scheduled for 7.30pm on 30 July at the Community Centre with two officers from the Wellington City Council giving talks. It is open to all and free.

Our Sponsors:
We have a number of sponsors which we list on our Home Page and in our Newsletter. In recognition of the generosity of our sponsors, the committee has decided to also highlight one sponsor each week in our newsletter. This week we have chosen Gillian Cross Collective First National as our featured sponsor:

Gillian Cross is a very familiar face to most of us in the walking group. She has over 30 years experience in real estate in Churton Park and during that time she has seen many houses emerge from bare sections to established homes and gardens – and she has sold some of those homes a number of times! Gillian has been a very longstanding supporter of the walking group, contributing very generously.
CPCW encourage you to support Gillian at Collective First National - she provides a wealth of knowledge and professional service to our community. She has been a great supporter of CPCW and we encourage you to support her in return.
Gillian Cross, Collective First National, 101c Westchester Drive, Churton Park

A reminder about walking arrangements:
After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’. Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group. Please forward these by email.
Finally, just a reminder to swap telephone numbers amongst those with whom you travel to the starting point each week. A handy back-up for any late changes to arrangements.
Reminder: Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.
Walk Details for Wednesday June 5th 2024.
This Week's Walks: This week we are walking along some of the streets of Silverstream and the parks adjoining the Hutt River. These are three new walks, although we have walked some parts of these walks in the past. At 9:00am on a weekday Google maps reckon the time for the trip from Churton Park to the parking described below takes just under 30 minutes. Therefore walks will commence at 9:35am.
PPs: A 4.29km loop walk with no hills utilising the tracks in Silverstream and a return along footpaths. All crossings across Fergusson Drive can be made using traffic lights or pedestrian crossings. You can see the walk here
SSs: A 6.36km loop walk with no hills, firstly around the streets of Silverstream and then returning on tracks through the nearby parks. All crossings across Fergusson Drive can be made using traffic lights or pedestrian crossings. You can see the walk here
FFs: A 7.26km loop walk heading out using park tracks, then heading around the streets of Silverstream and then returning to the cars using the same track back through the parks. You can see the walk on MapoMeter here and on Plotaroute here
Parking: The parking for all three groups is at the end of County Lane, Silverstream. Turn off River Road at the Silverstream Exit onto Fergusson Drive. County Lane is the first left (the same road serves the Golf Driving Range).
Coffee: We will warn Columbus Coffee, Mitre 10 Mega, Petone that a good number of us will be arriving for coffee. They generally cope with our numbers well and there is always plenty of parking.

Gary Dick plotted a challenging route in the hills above Maungaraki for the Friday walkers. 15 walkers headed out on a walk with a distance over 13km and a total ascent of over 600m. For some of the group this included walking up a trap-line to discover "The Tin Shed", a home-from-home in the middle of the bush. A hard scrabble, but great fun!
Here are photos of the two groups taken by David Pegram and Gay Hoffman respectively.

And a selection of photos of "The Tin Shed". The top two are taken by Gay Hoffman and show the 5***** accommodation!
The lower two photos taken by Bill Gaudie show some of the signage that has made its way to the hut - including an MMP Referendum sign which dates back to 1993!
On a "Gary Walk" you are never sure of the surprises that await!
