Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 6th October 2024

Last week’s walks.

Last week saw another excellent turn-out of walkers on Wednesday with 63 going on walks around Linden.  Prior to setting out we observed a moment's silence in memory of Jan Jones who had passed away on 25 September.  Her funeral service was held in the afternoon and 24 members of our walking group attended as well as a good number observing the service on the live stream.

There were 3 walkers (plus Red) on Thursday evening walking from Johnsonville to Newlands and Paparangi and return.   The Friday walkers went up Mount Kaukau and along the skyline with 20 walkers completing a distance of 13.9km.

Our Christmas Function 27th November

This will be held at The Pines once again with a similar menu for the festive season lunch as we enjoyed last year.

The cost of the function is $42 per person.

Over this past year we have built up a good reserve of funds and accordingly we can now fully subsidise the return bus trip on this one occasion. Please note that this subsidy will only apply for this occasion - unless we are again in a position to do so in the future.  Early bookings for the function are welcomed as this assists our planning and schedule for the event.

Please make your payment to CPCW account:

     02-0524-0233091-00

noting your name(s) and in the reference field please write ‘Xmas’ or ‘Xmas& Bus’ if you wish to travel by the bus.

Pick-up and return times will be advised shortly (but will be similar to last year).  We need to know how many will be taking the bus to ensure we book the correct size transport (and also so that we know we have everyone ‘on board’ before departure).

Away Walk 2025 - Methven

"I know that it is very early days, but suitable accommodation for a large group is not that easy to find so I have booked in at the Southern Cross Lodge, Methven, where I have reserved all 25 rooms in the Lodge. I have negotiated a group rate of $135 per night which includes a continental breakfast. Dates are for a four night stay, arriving Wednesday 5 November and departing Sunday 9 November. Mid-Canterbury is a part of the country that CPCW has not been to. It has some glorious scenery and some great walking.

There is no need to get in touch with me at the moment. I will be asking for a small non-refundable deposit towards the end of the year. I will advertise this in the newsletter."

Walk Details for Wednesday 9th October 2024

This Week's Walks:  A little further north for this week's walks with all three walks located in Whitby.  We move the parking to Endeavour Park to allow for three new walks just for a bit of variation.  Being in Whitby they all will have as least some undulations.

The walks will start at 9:20am from the designated parking.

PPs:  A new 4.29km clockwise loop walk using the footpaths, pathways and tracks of Whitby.    You can see the walk here

SSs:  A new 5.23km anti-clockwise loop walk taking inn the paths and walkways of Whitby.  You can see the walk here

FFs:  A new 7.22km clockwise loop walk taking in several of the Whitby walkways with the rest on roads and footpaths. You can see the walk here on MapoMeter and on Plotaroute here

Parking:   The parking for all three groups is in the Endeavour Park carpark adjacent to the Western Suburbs Football club rooms.  Note that this is a new start point.  Endeavour Park is accessed off Albatross Close which is off the northern end of James Cook Drive.  Both Transmission Gully and the coastal route (SH59) give easy access to James Cook Drive. There is quite a large carpark adjacent to the football clubrooms so parking is not a problem.

Coffee:   Coffee is at Columbus Coffee, Mitre 10 Mega, Porirua.  We have advised them that a good number of us will be arriving.  They usually cope quite well with our numbers.

It was great to see such a large number of walkers out on Wednesday to blaze trails around Linden and Tawa.  Having passed the equinox you must all have a spring in your step!

Thanks to Brian Vincent and Hue Ng for this week's photos of the SSs and FFs:

And Thursday saw a select group of four walkers (including Red) who headed out in Johnsonville, Newlands and Paparangi.  Thanks to Ginny Yee for this photo:

"You can't beat Wellington on a good day" - and Friday was one of spring's best.  Gary Dick provided a route up Mt Kaukau, along the Skyline Ridge, back down part of the Silver Sky track into Crofton Downs, then through various bush tracks and streets to the Khandallah Pool.  20 walkers "enjoyed" the challenge that this route of 14km provided!
