Churton Park Community Walkers
Newsletter 23 April 2023
Organising the CPCW group!
We are really fortunate that there is a keen team of walkers who make sure all our activities are planned and happen on time. Last week I acknowledged all those involved in the actual walks. This week we similarly acknowledge those involved in ensuring that everything runs smoothly:
Paul Alpe - who maintains the membership database and all our records. Paul is also a key person in ensuring that our Social activities are well planned.
Peter Nalder – is responsible for maintaining our website and ensuring that the newsletter is distributed to everyone each week. Peter also maintains the photographs database.
Keith Thomas – looks after the finances so that we can continue to hold all the events that are planned each year.
David Pegram and Wayne Jackson organise our annual ‘away trips’ which have been such a success that numbers of participants increase every year. David has also taken up the role of Deputy Convenor
Away Walk 2024 - Tasmania
The proposal for the Away Walk location in 2024 is Tasmania. We would like to form a planning group whose aim will be to draft an outline of the trip which includes dates, location(s), possible accommodation, ideas for walks and approximate costs. The initial meeting of this planning group will be in September at 8 Dormar Place. We would particularly value input from people who have experience in researching and leading walks, and those who know a little about Tasmania. If you are keen to join this planning group please contact David Pegram David.Pegram.nz@gmail.com
Once the planning group has drafted an outline of the trip we will arrange an information meeting for everyone who might be interested in going on the trip. This will be later in the year, possibly in October.
We are fortunate to have a great team organising all our walks.
Last Weeks Walks
Well the weather let us down last week with all the Wednesday walks cancelled. However the Thursday group did much better and 7 walkers (and Red) enjoyed a balmy evening walk around Churton Park. On Friday 12 walkers completed a 10.5kms walk on the Colonial Knob/Spicers loop.
This Weeks Walks (Wednesday 26 April)
The schedule noted that the walks were going to be based at Melling and this would have perhaps meant walking in wet bush and perhaps muddy paths and so we are shifting the base to Avalon. (Also we are still to create and further investigate the Melling based walks but this will happen in the future.) The walks that we describe below are all ones that we have walked before.
PP’s: A 5.90km flat loop heading out northwards and taking in the stop bank track through Fraser Park and returning back via the riverside track. You can see the walk here.
SS’s: A 7.69km flat loop a bit similar to the PP’s but heading a bit further north. There are opportunities to shorten the walk should some wish to do so. You can see the walk here.
FF’s: A 9.20km flat loop heading north via the riverside track and returning via the stop bank through Fraser Park. You can see the walk here.
Parking
Parking for all groups is in the large car park adjacent to Avalon Park which is entered from Fairway Drive. On the Hutt motorway turn right at the lights just past the Kelson turn off. This takes you onto Fairway Drive and the entry to the carpark is left about 250m along this road.
Coffee
Coffee is at Columbus Coffee, Mitre 10 Mega, Petone. We have let them know that a number of us will be coming for coffee.
Website
When you open the website to view your walk have a quick look at the “Home Page”. This usually has a new picture each week generally showing a view from one of our walks.
Cancellation
If the walks are cancelled an email will be sent out as early as possible but definitely before 8:00am.
Enjoy your walks.
Brian Vincent.
Koha
Every week we leave a note about Koha in the newsletter. We have no idea what private sharing arrangements are in place regarding getting rides but we trust that those who don’t regularly bring cars do make up for it in some small way, be it buying a coffee for the driver or by making some small cash donation.
Walk Schedules
You can look at the walk schedule for May here.
Photos
Below a photo from last week. Walkers please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to peter@jville.kiwi preferably small size (around 450kb).
