Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter September 15th 2024

Last week’s walks.

Unfortunately, while the weather was fine on Wednesday for the Wainui Challenge, this time the traffic provided the challenge.  Some walkers sat quietly in the queue of cars and eventually made it out to the Hutt; some used some brilliant tactics to make their way to the front of the queue and out to the walks; and some just gave up and headed home.  On Thursday the walkers decided to meet up for dinner at 1841 in Johnsonville for a celebration of 11 years of walking.  A total of 14 walkers and partners gathered for an enjoyable evening.   Fortunately, there were 17 walkers who walked on Friday around Eastbourne and up into the hills.  If Friday's walks had been cancelled, it would certainly have been a dire week of (not) walking!

Once again, a further reminder of forthcoming events.  Details will be sent out closer to these events, but mark your diaries now.

Diary Notes for Upcoming Social Events:

Wednesday November 27th 2024 - CPCW Christmas Lunch at The Pines; bus transport from Churton Park will be organised again.

A reminder about walking arrangements:

After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’.  Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group.  Please forward these by email.

Finally, just a reminder to swap telephone numbers amongst those with whom you travel to the starting point each week. A handy back-up for any late changes to arrangements.

Reminder:   Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Walk Details for Wednesday September 18th 2024.

This Week's Walks:   Last Wednesday’s walks just became a story about traffic jams; some got to the walk but most didn’t.  Anyway, that is the end of the Wainui Hill Challenge for a while. This week's Wednesday walks are in Maungaraki, still in the Hutt Valley, but we surely can’t have the same traffic problems again.  All walks are ones we have done in the past although the FF’s has been reversed. For both the SSs and the PPs the walks avoid slippery tracks, although the SSs do have a short section of well formed track.  (We will leave the other, sometimes slippery, tracks to late spring or summer.). The FF's walk has a bit more of the bush tracks down to Percy Reserve; the PPs and SSs do not get into Percy Reserve. The walks will start at 9:20am from the designated parking area.

PPs:  A 3.78km walk using the footpaths and streets of Maungaraki.  You can see the walk here

SSs:  A 4.93km walk which has previously been noted as suitable for winter.  It includes a short section of a bush track, but this is also noted as well formed.  You can see the walk here

FFs:  A 6.41km walk which heads down into Percy Reserve and out and back up the hill using a different track.  It does include quite a bit of bush track so wear decent shoes or boots.    You can see the walk here on MapoMeter and on Plotaroute here

Parking:   The parking for all three groups is in our usual place for these walks - Rowan Street opposite the Maungaraki shops.

Coffee:   Coffee is at Benedicts CafĂ© which is within the Maungaraki Shops near the parking area.

Photos

Walkers - please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link.  Preferably small size (around 450kb).  It has been great to receive a larger number of photos from PPs and SSs - keep them coming, please!

Wednesday walks were a "DIY" affair for those who managed to make it out to the Hutt.  I am not sure how many people adhered to the routes plotted by Russell, but it was a lovely day and at least some of the group were able to enjoy that part of our world!   Thanks to those who did make it and sent in photos.  These included selfies taken by Pat Vincent & Graham Bentley; an interesting shot taken by Janice Ingold of her group's compulsory toilet stop; and a chance encounter on the Wainuiomata Hill Road as some walkers heading up met some coming down.

Thursday's walkers ventured no further than 1841 in Johnsonville this week. They enjoyed a well earned rest in exchange for a sociable evening to celebrate 11 years of walking.  Thank you to Hue Ng who provided this photograph and suggested - "this photo captured happiness blooming from within a pond of flowers".  Hue also advised that "Red was missing from the gathering as he had been out for three walks with his mum earlier in the day and he was too tired to entertain the Aunties and Uncles!!"

Friday's walk was plotted and led by Graham and Wendy Bentley and took the 17 walkers up into the hills above and through the streets of Eastbourne.  The two groups walked in opposing directions and met somewhere in the middle.  There is some stunning bush around Butterfly Creek.
