Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 20th October 2024

Last week’s walks.

The weather this week allowed all three walks to proceed. On Wednesday a total of 62 people (9PPs, 31SSs and 22FFs) walked in Johnsonville; there were 8 walkers out and about in Tawa on Thursday evening; and on Friday 19 people walked from Island Bay to Wellington Railway Station.

And a reminder to make your payment to secure your place at our 2024 Christmas Function

Wednesday November 27th

This will be held at The Pines once again with a similar menu for the festive season lunch as we enjoyed last year.

The cost of the function is $42 per person.

Over this past year we have built up a good reserve of funds and accordingly we can now fully subsidise the return bus trip on this one occasion. Please note that this subsidy will only apply for this occasion - unless we are again in a position to do so in the future.  Early bookings for the function are welcomed as this assists our planning and schedule for the event.

Please make your payment to CPCW account:

     02-0524-0233091-00

noting your name(s) and in the reference field please write ‘Xmas’ or ‘Xmas& Bus’ if you wish to travel by the bus.

Pick-up and return times will be advised shortly (but will be similar to last year).  We need to know how many will be taking the bus to ensure we book the correct size transport (and also so that we know we have everyone ‘on board’ before departure).

Walk Details for Wednesday 23rd October 2024

This Week's Walks:   Away from home this week with all walks in Eastbourne.  A bit of feedback has led to two walks being prepared for the SSs.  One is a previous SS walk that goes up the hill tracks and along the ridge and back down again via another track.  The other walk is longer, almost certainly shorter in time than the hill version, and is completely flat.

All walks to start at 9:20am from the designated parking.

PPs:   A 4.09km flat loop taking in the seaside and also some of the streets including the village shopping area.  If it is a little bit windy* the coast could be avoided by heading to the next street inland.  Plenty of interesting houses etc to look at and good sea views.  You can see the walk here
* I am guessing Russell means "windy" as in breezy and not "windy" as in tortuous.  Don't you just love the English language! Ed

SSs:  Hill Choice :  A 3.99km Hill Loop using McKenzie Road Track and Muritai Park Track.  It is a loop track that the SSs have walked before.  Good shoes are recommended for these tracks, although they are of a good formed standard. Best to have a map copy or, better still, a walker with the walk on their phone.  (It should be quite difficult to get lost.)    You can see the walk here

SSs: Flat Choice:  A 5.34km flat walk taking in the shoreline and streets of Eastbourne.  You can see the walk here

FFs:   A 5.70km loop walk that we have carried out before.  Hill up, along a ridge, then back down.  You can see the walk here on MapoMeter and on Plotaroute here

Parking:  The parking for all three groups is on Muritai Road between Kauri Street and Konini Street.  Walkers may have to use the adjoining streets: namely Kauri Street, Konini Street and Miro Street.

Coffee:   Coffee will be at “The Pavilion” in Williams Park in Days Bay.  We will advise them that a number of us will be coming for coffee after our walks.

There were 62 walkers out in various parts of Johnsonville and Newlands on Wednesday - once they had negotiated the carpark.  Arriving was relatively straightforward, but negotiating the Stop/Go team and the array of orange cones when exiting added to the excitement of the morning.

Thanks to Hue Ng and Mike Drain for this week's photos of the FFs and PPs.  Mike commented that the PPs had "found their special place".

There was no group photo of the SSs this week, but Peter Nalder has provided one of the previous week's group.  He also provided the photo of a SS member trying to locate a ball in the trees.  Apparently, a ball was kicked out of the Onslow College grounds by a student.  One of the SSs, fancying himself as Jordie Barrett, attempted to punt the ball back over the trees.  Unfortunately, he was not entirely successful...    All offers from Scott Robertson and his colleagues are off!    I was tempted to run a "Spot the Ball" competition, but I suspect all the SS team know exactly where it is - and probably will continue to remind the unlikely All Black hopeful!

Thursday's walkers travelled to Tawa and walked.  Thanks to Hue Ng for these photos.  Hue's second photo captures the early ascendancy of the supermoon, but unfortunately the comet was not visible!

Two teams of walkers headed out on Friday on the City to Sea walk - in reverse.  A good 14+km of ups and downs with some great views over the southern suburbs and over the city centre and harbour.  Great to see so many kaka, as well as all the other bird-life that dwells within our city.

Photos were taken by Graham Bentley, John Houghton and Bill Gaudie:
