Churton Park Community Walkers
Newsletter 3rd August 2025
Last week:
When the weather is looking marginal for a Wednesday morning, Helen and I confer at 7.30am to make the decision on whether to cancel the walk or not. It was another close call this week and, as soon as we made the decision that the walk was on, rain started hammering again at the lounge windows. Fortunately, the weather forecasters were correct and an improvement came through in time for 32 walkers (15SS and 17FF) to complete the planned walks in Tawa without getting wet. The Thursday and Friday walks also went ahead. There was a good turn out on Thursday evening with 8 walkers completing 6km around Churton Park. On Friday 21 walkers braved the cold and tackled a challenging 17.6km loop, starting and finishing at Island Bay and taking in the summits of Mts Alfred, Albert and Victoria.
Wayne and I head overseas on Monday and are not back until mid October. I am extremely grateful to Bill who will be 'taking the reins' while I am away. I will, however, be following your walking exploits from afar.

Walk Details for Wednesday 6th August 2025
This Week's Walks: This week's Wednesday walks are all based in Karori. Once past Onslow College and Raroa Intermediate schools it is a relatively clear drive to Karori apart from the roundabout at Ngaio. All should be able to to make it before the starting time without any major problems. The walks will start at 9:20am from the designated starting point. The three walks are all new walks but probably include parts of walks done previously.
PPs: A 4.28km loop walk which is mostly flat with only a couple of minor rises. The walk can be readily shortened at two or three points if required. Uses footpaths and walkways, but does include a short sealed path in a park. You can see the walk here.
SSs: A 5.62km loop which has a flat area to start with and another to finish, but has a rise or two between. You can see the walk here.
FFs: A 7.39km loop walk which includes a bush track with the rest on footpaths and walkways. The walk does include quite a lot of hill, but can readily be made a bit shorter once Duthie Street is reached. Please note that the track in the bush, whilst 90% in good walking condition, does have a small (about 20m) downhill section that has exposed and slippery tree roots and a pole could be useful here. Otherwise not tricky. You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.
Parking: Parking is in Samual Parnell Road, Karori. We have parked there several times before. We normally have to use the nearby streets as well, but there has never been a problem with enough space.
Coffee: We will inform Karori Park Café that a number of us will be coming for coffee and or a snack.
Happy walking.

CPCW PHOTOS
Wednesday saw CPCW head north to Tawa to explore the streets of our neighbouring suburb. This week's photos have been provided by Rowena Rowe (SS) and Clint Davis (FF). Clint commented that his photo continues a theme of residential backgrounds, but this one with a caravan included for added interest. Clint has also observed that the FFs seem to have an affinity for photos in the middle of an intersection. Are they dare devils or is there something akin to the old trick of trying to cram as many people into a Mini as possible?

It was a bleak and cold Friday that saw Jane Gaudie lead the two groups of walkers out over the hills of central and southern Wellington to "knock off 3 of the buggers"! Not sure that Mts Alfred, Albert and Victoria are quite up there with Everest, but we'll let the FFs away with their delusions - as always!! Photos this week come from John Houghton and Margaret Ellis:
