Churton Park Community Walkers
Newsletter 17th August 2025
Last week:
It has been another good week for walking in Wellington - Wednesday's outing around Paremata/Mana; Thursday's team on an out-and-back walk from the Bucket Tree in Tawa to Linden; and Friday's walkers out in part of the Belmont Regional Park plus parts of Porirua East and Aotea. All were able to head out in fine weather and enjoy their exercise and social contact. In contrast to our winter temperatures, David has reported from Montréal and Quebec City where the temperatures have been rather too warm for walking!

Walk Details for Wednesday 20th August 2025
This Week's Walks: Back to one of our easier parking challenges this week as we are back at Adventure Park in Whitby. There are three walks with some minor differences from other walks that we have carried out in the past and, if similar, they probably have been reversed. All three walks have been prepared by Andy Dunn. He has shortened the SS's walk a little to compensate for a bit of a climb. (So basically Andy has been about 1km kinder than what might have been provided!). No compensation for the PPs and FFs. The walks will start at 9:20am from the designated starting point.
PPs: A 4.01km loop walk on a mixture of good quality tracks and footpaths. Contains some gentle rises. You can see the walk here.
SSs: A 5.00km loop on a mixture of the good quality Whitby tracks and their footpaths with the inclusion of a graded climb to a lookout with some seats and then down all the way to the vehicles. You can see the walk here.
FFs: An 8.34km loop walk that includes two or three good rises - all on good surfaces. You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.
Parking: Parking for all three groups is in the Adventure Park car parking area which is off Discovery Drive opposite the Whitby Shopping Area. (Our usual Whitby Parking.)
Coffee: We have informed Columbus Coffee in Mitre 10 Mega, Porirua, that a good number of us will be arriving for coffee etc. It is a little bit off the route directly home, but handles our numbers a lot better than most other cafés in the area.
Happy walking.

CPCW PHOTOS
A good morning for the Wednesday walks around Mana and Paremata saw an equally good turn-out of walkers in all groups. Rowena Rowe caught the gathering before the groups departed and after at Columbus Coffee.

The photo of a very cheerful looking bunch of PPs is courtesy of Mike Drain. Janet Tyson provided the photo of the second of the SS groups.

Photos of the FFs are thanks to Clint Davis and Hue Ng. Hue's photo on the right has captured a moment of animated discussion while her second photo shows everyone concentrating on putting their feet firmly on the steps as they descend.

On Thursday evening the 6 walkers + Red headed out from the Bucket Tree at Takapu Road and completed a round trip of 6.8km out to Linden.
|
|
Friday dawned frosty and developed into a stunning morning for the walkers to be led out by Keith Thomas on a little cross-country jaunt from the Takapu Road substation and into Waihora Park, across Cannons Creek, through Aotea and Bothamley Park and back up through a bit of gorse and blackberry to the cars. A mere 16.2km later and some 420m of climb and they could enjoy some refreshments. Interesting to note that, in keeping with the leader of the group, the walk finished along Cardiff Crescent and Carnarvon Place. No dragon sightings were reported! The first photo is courtesy of Gay Hoffman and the second is from Wendy Bentley who, with Graham, comprised the entirety of the earlier group this week. Wendy asks "Do we need a doggy doo bag?".
