Current Wednesday Walk

17 February 2021

Convenor’s Comment

The weather did not play its part last Wednesday and the walks were cancelled.  We will revisit these walks in the near future.  We note the the forecast was correct in that it did clear but not till early afternoon.

The weather the next day did allow for the Thursday walkers to get out and about.  Six walkers completed walks in Trellisick Park which included crossing the small but impressive little walking bridge that the Council had constructed not too long ago.

Also the weather allowed for the Friday Walkers to carry out one of their longer walks with a total number of 24 starters at Lowry Bay with 13 of the number completing the ridge line walk right to the Bus Barn where they caught the bus back to their cars.  Two of these finishers ignored the chance to catch the bus and decided to walk the extra 7km back to their cars.

This week we are revisiting walks carried out last in 2018.  However the FF’s and the SS’s walks have been altered to take in a track that means that the part of the walk on the road is not repeated.  The views from the walk up the road are expansive.  If it looks like it may be windy an extra wind proof layer would be wise.  Also as a picnic is planned bring a seat or rug and coffee or tea and perhaps a snack.

We do note the following people are having birthdays this coming week.  Susan Dick, Marilyn Gibson and Vicky Prout.  We all trust they enjoy their special day.

Russell and Alison

General

All walks are based in Brooklyn.

PP’s: The walk is from the Wind Turbine carpark up the sealed road towards but not as far as the Navigation Dome and back again.   Of note on the route is the “Castle” which we believe is used as an upmarket doggy stay. Walkers can choose at what point they turn back and return to the carpark.  They can also go all the way to the Dome if they so wish.  You can view the walk here.

SS’s: A 7.48km loop that heads up the sealed road for 3km where there is a junction.  A short distance down the track at the junction walkers will find a bike track that parallels the road and will take the walkers back to the Wind Turbine Carpark.  You can view the walk here.

FF’s: A 9.26km loop walk.  Head back down the access road for 1km and then take the uphill bike track all the way to the top and then return by the sealed  road.  You can view the walk here.

Parking

Parking is at the large Wind Turbine Carpark. Follow the Wind Turbine signs at the top of Brooklyn.  The Wind Turbine carpark is about 1km along Hawkins Hill Road. There is plenty of parking for our large group.

Coffee

There is no large cafe nearby so another picnic is planned.  There is a nice grassed area adjacent to the turbine should the day be fine and windless and there is some shelter and a step to sit on in the information centre structure.  Should the weather be such that neither of these two areas or other nearby areas are suitable, then there are several cafe’s on the backroad on the way home that could be visited.  (Next door to Countdown in Crofton Downs, Cafe Villa in Ngaio,  two cafes in Khandalla main road, the library in Johnsonville, Thyme and Simmer).  Lets hope the weather allows for a pleasant picnic coffee at the turbine with its wonderful views over Wellington.

Murphy says to Paddy, "What ya talkin into an envelope for?"  "I'm sending a voicemail ya fool!"
