Current Wednesday Walk

17 March 2021

Convenor’s Comment

Another successful week of walking despite very "iffy" conditions for the Wednesday walk through Seton Nossiter.  54 members and one visitor turned up to walk the tracks and surrounds of Seton Nossiter Park but as the heavy rain hit while travelling to and arriving at our destination, I do believe some turned around and went to the cafes for coffee.  The exact number who piked is unknown and will remain so!!!!!  Well done to those who decided to brave the conditions and ended up walking in what ended up being fine (or near fine) conditions.  The Thursday group of six  walkers did a local walk to Johnsonville where they celebrated the marriage of Christine Binns and Duncan MacMillan before walking back to Churton Park . The Friday group once again had two groups, the main group who did the loop in Dry Creek including the waterfall and the other a flat walk along the Hutt River.  A total of 20 walkers.  So another successful week of walking.  Thanks to Helen and Russell Paterson, Christine Binns and Gary Dick for organising the walks this week and of course, to our walk day leaders.

I would like to welcome Josephine Tasker who joined our group this week.  I hope you enjoyed the outing on Wednesday and that we will see you on future walks.

Its birthday time for John Morrison.  Happy birthday John.  Hope you have a wonderful day celebrating with family and friends.

Annual Away Walk

The annual away walk meeting was held this past week and there has been an amazing response.  I would like to thank David Pegram and Wayne Jackson for organising this.  Having undertaken this role in the past, I understand how much work has goes into it and as a group, it is appreciated.  Looks an exciting and wonderful trip so thank you once again.

Monthly Drinks

Simmer Café has notified us that they are planning on opening again in the evenings this coming week.  As we have received feedback and arguments as to both venues we have decided to allow you to state your preference as to which of the following options you prefer.  We will take the majority as our final decision.  There are three options:

  • Simmer Café
  • Sprig and Fern
  • Month about i.e. one month at Sprig and Fern and the second month at Simmer

Please email your choice of option by Friday 19 March.

Walk Schedules

You can look at the walk schedule for the rest of March here.

Wednesday 17th March 2021

General

All three walks are on the lower slopes of Spicer Forest.  All three take in Smurf Corner and other similar displays.

PP’s: This is a 2.40km one way walk and means that some organising of the cars is required.  This is covered under “Parking”.   The gradient is reasonably gentle although there are quite a few minor rises and falls.  You can view the walk here.

SS’s:  This is 5.70km loop going out on the higher track and back via a slightly lower track.  There are only minor rises and falls.  You can view the walk here.

FF’s:   This is a 6.27km loop reversing the SS’s walk plus adding a little bit extra.  You can view the walk here.

Parking

The parking for all three groups is in the Public carpark off Broken Hill Road just past the last industrial building on the right.  We may have to also park on the road in this same general area.  For the PP’s depending on how many of you there are you will have to drop at least one car off at the end point of your walk so you can be ferried back to the other cars.  If this is problematic let one of the committee know.

Coffee

Two cafe’s are named; Columbus Coffee in Mitre 10 Mega and Kaizen in Pataka the Porirua Library Building.

Medical experts in Melbourne were asked if it is time to ease the COVID lockdown.
Gastroenterologists had sort of a gut feeling about it, but Neurologists thought the government had a lot of nerve.

(to be continued).
