Convenor’s Comment

Alison’s Corner

There are two birthdays this week.  These are Bill Black and Gary Dick.  One of these might be a special number.  We also understand that we missed Andy Dunne’s birthday last week. We trust that both Bill and Gary have an enjoyable special day and that Andy also had an enjoyable special day.

Friday Drinkies:

This month the Friday Night “Drinkies” were held at Sprig & Fern, Tawa.  A good number turned up for an enjoyable night.  Next month we are back at Simmer CafĂ©.  Both the Sprig & Fern and Simmer donated prizes for our Anniversary Dinner.

Mid Winter 8th Anniversary Dinner

We trust that all that attended the Anniversary Dinner enjoyed their night.  Thanks to all of you for coming and helping make for a good night. Special thanks to all those walkers that helped with the various chores relating to set up and clean up etc.  A special thanks to our MC, Pat Vincent, who kept the night moving along smoothly.

We also would like to note here the other sponsors that donated prizes for our Dinner function.

These are Gillian Cross of Collective (Gift Cards), Emma Kate (Massage), Daisy Jake Hairdresser (Hairdressing Services), Super Liquor (A fine bottle), Columbus Coffee (Gift Cards), Pamper Cottage (Manicure), New World (Food Hamper), Village Pharmacy (Gift Pack), Walking New Zealand (Magazine Subscriptions), Shoe Clinic (Gift Packs), Twigland (Gift Vouchers), Lighthouse Cinema (Movie Tickets).

Last Weeks Walks

Those that turned up at 9:00am at Churton Park New World carpark were welcomed with a very cool and biting southerly wind and it would not have been a surprise if quite a lot of walkers had stayed at home.  However by the time we congregated in Ngati Toa domain there were 68 of us with this being made up of 16 PP’s, 35 SS’s and 17 FF’s (The week before in better weather we had 72). So a good turnout to take on the streets and hills within Paremata or in the case of the PP’s a walk along the shoreline of the Pauatahanui Inlet.  This time there was absolutely no problem with the parking.  On Thursday Night 5 walkers headed out around the streets of Churton Park and on Friday 21 of the Friday Walkers took in a circuit of the Miramar Peninsula.

Photos

Here are some photos from last week.  Walkers please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to peter@jville.kiwi preferably small size (around 450kb).

Walk Schedules

You can look at the walk schedule for the rest of August here.

Wednesday 11th August 2021
General

All three walks are set in Petone and are walks from last year.  All walks are basically flat and either on good quality tracks or footpaths.

PP’s: A 5.47km loop heading out up the golf course stop bank and then back through some of the Petone Suburbs.  You can view the walk here.

SS’s: A 7.35km loop that is up the left bank of the Hutt River, across the Ewen Bridge and then back down the right bank.  All good tracks.  You can view the walk here.

FF’s: A 8.40km loop that heads up the right bank of the Hutt River and then into Alicetown, over the Ewen Bridge and back via the left bank.  You can view the walk here.

Parking

For all three groups is in Marine Parade.  Please park nearer to the Hutt River end of the street.  There should be plenty of parking.  Head along The Esplanade.  Then The Esplanade becomes Waione Street.  Continue on and then turn right into Kirkcaldy Street.  There is a turning lane for this turn; and then turn left into Marine Parade.  The Gull Petrol Station is on the corner of Waione and Kirkcaldy Streets.

Coffee

We have told Columbus Coffee in Petone’s Mitre 10 Mega that we will be coming for coffee.  They generally cope with our numbers quite well.

Cancellation

If required will be by email at 8:00am.

Enjoy your walks.

Koha

Remember that if you rely on others for your transport most weeks then a small $2 payment for a nearby walk and a $4 payment for a longer walk would help to lessen the costs a little for those providing the transport.

Laugh

Statistically, 6 out of 7 dwarfs are not Happy.
