Alison’s Corner

The last few days of September and the first few days in October have been noted by the media as the most popular birthday dates of the year.  (Work it Out). This coming week we have three celebrating their birthdays.  These are Hue Ng and Barbara Prosser on the same day followed by Paul Bayliss.  We trust they and also anyone missed have a very enjoyable special day.

Friday Night Drinkies

About 26 turned up for the Friday Night Drinkies which was a few more than was predicted in our warning to the host. It appeared to be a well enjoyed night.  Back to Simmer next month if they are open in the evenings by then.  Simmer is currently closing at 3:00pm during Level 2.

Last Weeks Walks

The weather played its part and so the Titahi Bay walks that were cancelled the week before went ahead with 13 PP’s, 33 SS’s and 24 FF’s heading around the coast and the nearby hills.  (A total of 70 walkers.) Comments were made by regular walkers in this area that this was the first time they had seen the tide so low that they were able to take the causeway shortcut across the neck of the small lagoon.  Thursday night’s weather was good and allowed for 7 keen walkers to head out around the streets of Churton Park.  The Friday Walkers took on some of the mountain bike tracks of Makara including an exceptionally steep track well named as “Deliverance”.  Other times when this group have walked the Mountain Bike tracks only a very few bikes were seen.  However with Level 2 in place and many supposedly working from home there were a great deal more bikers than usual.  Walkers and bikes however do seem to be able to get on together on these tracks but perhaps not in the busy weekends.

Wednesday 6^th October 2021

General

We are be back on schedule for October.  So this weeks walks are based in Battle Hill.  For those interested there is information on the site describing the past history which relates to the naming of the area.

PP’s:  A 3.79km loop with a little bit of there and back. The there and back is to have a look at where the Transmission Gully Roadway is up to in this area.  The walk is reasonably flat.   You can view the walk here.

SS’s:  A 4.70km loop which starts with a hill up through the bush.  The overall walk is reasonably short which will allow the walkers to take their time going up the hill in this bush.  It is a reasonable climb but rewarded with views at the stop.  A short there and back track is optional.  It takes walkers to the top of Battle Hill and better views.   You can view the walk here.

FF’s:  A 6.62km walk which is the reverse of the SS’s but taking in a little extra.   You can view the walk here.

Parking

Parking:  All groups.  Parking is in the toilet area of Battle Hill Station.  Battle Hill Station is well signposted and accessed off Paekakariki Hill Road.  (Take SH58 and turn left at the Pauatahanui roadabout and head along Paekakariki Hill Road for a distance of 6.3km.)  The turnoff to Battle Hill Station is on the right.

Coffee

Picnic!  Bring your own coffee or tea etc and a rug and or seat.  If the weather is at all suitable we will have a picnic under the trees alongside the carpark.  Should the weather make this a little uncomfortable then there is Groundup in Pauatahanui or Mitre 10 Mega in Porirua or café’s in Mana to try your luck at.

Cancellation

The normal cancellation before 8:00am will be sent by email if required.

At the time of writing this report the writers prediction is that we will still be walking under the Level 2 requirements. So remember to scan in and try for a little bit of social distancing. If we are back in Level 1 be happy.

Remember that if you rely on others for your transport most weeks then a small $2 payment for a nearby walk and a $4 payment for a longer walk would help to lessen the costs a little for those providing the transport.
