Current Wednesday Walk

27 January 2021

Convenor’s Comment

So far the year has been kind to us with the weather with  all groups able to undertake their scheduled walks.  We have had good numbers participating considering the time of the year when many are holidaying or on grandparent duties.

The Wednesday walks took us to around the Kenepuru landing development which seems to have grown hugely over a small space of time.  Once again there were over 50 which included a visitor, John Waters who is back in New Zealand for three months, and maybe longer.  Welcome John.  I hope you enjoyed the walk and that we will see you again during your stay.  The Thursday evening group walked through Trelissick Park and Wadestown area while the Friday walkers did a four hour walk from Wilton Bush to Tinakori Hill, through Karori Cemetery and back through Wilton Bush itself taking in the Old Quarry Tunnel and the  stunning old Rimu tree.  21 members undertook this walk in what were excellent conditions.  I would like to thank Helen and Russell Paterson, Christine Binns and Gary Dick, plus the leaders of any of the groups, for organising this past week’s walks.

A reminder that in these weather conditions, it is important to keep hydrated before, during and after the walks.  We do recommend that each and every one of you carries a drink bottle while out exercising as well as slapping on sunscreen and wearing sunhats.

I would also like to thank Jane Gaudie for her work with our first aid kits.  Jane has gone through most of the kits updating and replacing various items.  She has also set up a new kit that can be used by the Thursday group and used for any day walks or away trips.  This is an ongoing task and it is great that we have someone with medical experience undertaking this role.  Thanks Jane.

Its birthday time for Rod Stainer this week. Happy birthday Rod.  We do hope you have a wonderful day celebrating it with family and friends (and perhaps a round of golf).

This Wednesday we are back to the Te Whiti Riser in Lower Hutt. This walk finishes with a picnic in the park at the bottom so ensure you bring your morning tea, chair, picnic blanket and whatever else you wish to bring.

I look forward to seeing you all this week.  Remember to scan the QR code at the briefing or at the start of the walk!!!!

Walk Schedules

Wednesday 27th January 2021

General

 PP’s, SS’s and FF’s:

All three walks are on the Te Whiti Riser track.

This is a there and back track with a gradual incline, walkers can go as far along as they want to - recommend to go at least until the bridge lookout over the valley.  FF can go over the hill, SS to go to the top and the PP at far up as they wish before they turn around.  The FF’s total walk as shown on the map is 7.13km.

Parking

All three groups to park in the Riverside Drive Central carpark facing Te Whiti Park.

Take Whites Line East at Randwick Road roundabout and go straight on and then take a left turn onto Guthrie Street and then a right turn onto Riverside Drive Central where the parking area is a couple of hundred metres on.  If this is confusing use Google!

Coffee

As we are at a park a picnic has been organised.  Bring a rug, chair and jacket and tea or coffee and a nice nibble.  The PP’s can pick the most suitable area as they should be first back to the park.

If the weather does not play its part we could all head to Columbus Coffee at Mitre 10 Mega Petone.
