Convenor’s Comment

Alison’s Corner

Two birthdays to report on.  Firstly Murray Hoffman who is a FF walker and also a Friday walker, Graham Bentley who is a Friday Walker and then there is our Champion walker from the SS’s, Daphne Jones.  Trust they have a great special day and the same to anyone missed.

Last Weeks Walks

All three walking groups enjoyed a sunny day for their walks around the tacks and streets of Maungaraki.  The walks in the main avoided the more slippery tracks with the FF’s taking in a variation to avoid a slippery downhill track after advice from walkers who had used the track the day before.

The Devonshire Tea Event

In spite of our best efforts to ensure this ran smoothly, there were a few hiccups.  Our apologies to all those who had an extended wait for service.  Also many thanks to the early arrivals who sorted out some initial problems relating to what we thought was what we were getting and what the owner thought he was giving us.  Anyway we left on good terms with the owner.  He worked out how he could speed up the service and what additional information we could provide in the future to assist him.  So if we repeat this event some time in the future I am sure it would run a lot smoother and no one should be waiting so long. The fact that we had over 75 attendees suggest that there is a demand for something similar in the future.

The cancellation notice, if it needs to be sent, will clarify Café start times etc.  If the walks go ahead as planned the Devonshire Tea is immediately after your walk.  The three walks and the Devonshire Tea are all in Maungaraki.

Mid Winter Anniversary Dinner

The date has been set as Saturday Evening 31st July 2021.  Please diary the date and see if you can keep it clear.  The Johnsonville Bowling Club has been booked.  Once we have sorted out the cost per head a formal invitation will be added to the newsletter and we will start collecting names etc.

Enjoy your walks.

Walk Schedules

You can look at the walk schedule for June here.

Wednesday 26th May 2021

General

All walks will start in the general area of Spruce Goose Café in Lyall Bay Parade and take in the South Coast.  If strong southerlies are forecast we may be forced to change to a local walk.  This would be advised in the same manner as the Cancellation Notice.

PP’s: A 4.85km there and back walk that can be shortened and does allow for a part return on an off road track.  You can view the walk here.

SS’s: A 6.67km there and back walk that also includes a loop.  A bit of a hill walk up Hungerford Road is included.  If the majority feel it might be a little long the parking could be shifted nearer to where the loop starts.  You can view the walk here.

FF’s: A 7.54km loop mainly on streets but includes a sand track and unused roads and some steps.  You can view the walk here.

Parking

Parking for all three groups is anywhere on Lyall Bay Parade somewhere between the roundabout that is at the intersection of Lyall Bay Parade and Tirangi Road and the Spruce Goose Café. There is also all the parking area that the surfers use when the weather and waves are to their liking.

Coffee

Nothing has been booked.  The Spruce Goose is handy as is the Maranui Café or there is always a return to Simmer and other coffee bars in Island Bay.

Cancellation

If required will be by email at 8:00am.

Hear about the new restaurant called Karma? There’s no menu - you get what you deserve.
