Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 26th January 2025

Last week:

We enjoyed another fine Wednesday for the three regular walks – this time in Miramar, where 4 Pleasure Pacers, 14 Steady Steppers and 18 Fast Footers went out on the newly mapped walks.  A number of the walkers then enjoyed a coffee and chat at the Chocolate Fish café. Thursday evening saw 6 walkers go around Grenada and on Friday the regular team split up into three groups to go on their three different walks around Stokes Valley and Khandallah.   There were 23 walkers in total (in groups of 10, 6 and 7).

February.

Please note that when the Mana trip takes place (scheduled for 12th February)  we will be providing walks for those who are not going on that trip.  Details will be provided nearer the time in this newsletter.

Walk Details for Wednesday 29th January:

This Week's Walks:   Walks were to the south last week and this week they are to the North with all walks starting at Totara Park.  Travel via Transmission Gully and Highway 85 should avoid any traffic holdups.  All walks are to start at 9:20am from the designated parking area.

PPs:   A 4.58km loop on the river trails utilising both sides of the Hutt River.  The walk is basically flat - no steps, no hills.   You can see the walk here.

SSs:   A 6.06km loop that takes in a few of the residential streets as well as some of the river trail.   Basically flat; no steps, no hills! You can see the walk here.

FFs:   A 7.16km loop walk that is an exercise in navigation as it takes in a zigzag route through the residential areas and uses some of the walkways between the streets of these areas, but does not include any of the river trail.  You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.

Parking:    At the traffic lights on SH2 turn left into Totara Park (over a Hutt River bridge) and then right into the reserve and the carpark.  (Awakairangi Park.)

Coffee:   Nothing has been booked, but there plenty of coffee bars on the way home.  There is a café at the Car Museum in Trentham and also Columbus Coffee at Mitre 10 Mega, Upper Hutt, Fig Tree on Fergusson Drive and a couple of others in Upper Hutt ; of course we have Simmer back home.

CPCW Photos

Wednesday's walk took participants out and about on the southern end of the Miramar Peninsula.  Here is a selection of photos taken of the group at the meeting place before setting out; and photos of the SSs and FFs.  These photos have been provided by Paul Alpe, Brian Vincent, Rod Stainer and Russell Paterson respectively:

Thursday's team of walkers stepped out in Grenada.  Thank you to Brian Alderson for this photo:

Friday saw three groups of walkers heading out and about.  Two groups walked variations of a hillside bush walk plotted by Jane Gaudie, while another group of convalescents (and others!) walked on firmer footing around Khandallah.

These two photos from Wendy and Graham Bentley show one of the groups of the Stokes Valley adventurers:

The other group, who took on somewhat tougher terrain on the first part of their walk, were snapped at the trig by Bill Gaudie:

The third group, who paced the streets and steps of Khandallah, were chaperoned by John Houghton who took this photo which he has titled:  "The Beast's Beauties".
