Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 20th April 2025

Last week:

Despite some atrocious weather around the country, the conditions were mainly fine for walking this week in Wellington and there were no cancellations. The walks on Wednesday in Berhampore attracted 59 walkers (2 PP, 29 SS & 28 FF). On Thursday three walkers ventured out on a 6.2km walk around Johnsonville on what Christine describes as a 'balmy, pleasant evening with only the odd raindrop'. Seventeen Friday walkers wandered up and down and in and out of tracks and streets in Newlands, enjoying some beautiful weather and harbour views.

As always, a huge 'thank you' to those who regularly plan, plot and lead our weekly walks.

My best wishes for a happy Easter.

Walk Details for Wednesday 23rd April:

This Week's Walks:  Our venture into the city last Wednesday went quite smoothly so, as it is still school holidays, we will try again.  The walks for this coming Wednesday are in Maupuia (a little bit of Miramar as well) and are all new walks.  The walks avoid the relatively steep network of tracks in this area and have stuck to roads and walkways.  The parking for the SSs and the PPs are in the same area, but parking for the FFs is in a nearby area.  We will be back in our comfortable local area the week after this walk.  The walks are to start at 9:20am from the designated starting point.

PPs:   A 2.28 loop walk on the streets of Miramar, but not extending into Maupuia. You can see the walk here. (The walk could be extended, if required, by continuing down Miramar North Road until it meets Park Road and then continue back up Park Road.)  PP Parking:  Near to the entrance to Farrington Park which is at the point where Miramar North Road meets Weka Street.

SSs:  A 5.14km loop walking on the streets mainly of Maupuia and some in Miramar.  It takes in the old Prison Road that is now shown on maps as a track and includes the odd hill.  You can see the walk here.  SS Parking:  Near to the entrance to Farrington Park which is at the point where Miramar North Road meets Weka Street.

FFs:  A 6.63km loop taking in streets and tracks of Maupuia and a bit of Miramar and the old Prison Road.  Of course it includes some hills.  You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.  FF Parking:  Parking is in Nevay Road past the last of the houses, but well before the prison.

Coffee:  This is walker's own choice.  Walkers could organise a small group and head to a cafĂ© on the way home or just return to Simmer and Thyme.

Happy walking.

Russell Paterson

For the first week of the school holidays, Russell plotted walking routes in the city to take advantage of reduced traffic flows - always an uncertain exercise, but this week the traffic was favourable.  Walkers headed out on various routes taking in parts of Newtown, Berhampore, Mornington/Vogeltown/Kingston and Brooklyn.  CPCW walks are always a great way to see parts of Wellington you may never have ventured into previously!

Photos of the PPs, SSs and FFs have been provided by Mike Drain, Paul Alpe and Gay Hoffman respectively:

On Thursday, three walkers (+ Red) enjoyed a walk around Johnsonville.  Thanks to Duncan McMillan for these two photos:

On Friday, walkers headed out on a magnificent Good Friday morning on a walk around Newlands plotted by Brian Alderson and taking in lots of ups and downs to exercise both the legs and the heart!  Photos taken by Clint Davis and Bill Gaudie:

Home Page:  Don't forget to take a quick look at the “Home Page” - there is usually a new photo each week.

Walkers: please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link.  Preferably use a small size (around 450kb).
