Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 13th April 2025

Last week:

David is away this week walking the Abel Tasman with Wayne.  We look forward to hearing their tramping tales.

This week saw a "local" walk on Wednesday with 9 PPs, 31 SSs and 24 FFs taking the opportunity to explore their own backyard.  On Thursday, there were seven walkers who combined a walk with a bit of socialising and, on Friday, a total of 20 walkers enjoyed Titahi Bay/Onepoto and Whitereia Park.  Friday walkers welcomed back Steven Young who has walked with us in the past.

On Thursday a large group from CPCW attended the funeral service for Peter Bushnell.  It was a wonderful opportunity to learn a lot more about a man of very many talents who had made his mark in the world in so many different ways.  We knew him as a formidable walker - especially with his Nordic style - and a passion for plotting routes where no routes had been plotted before!  Despite the commitment Peter obviously made to his career, his focus on his family stands out above all.  We must thank Pam and the Bushnell family for sharing Peter with us in CPCW - it is particularly poignant to reflect upon the time a number of us spent with Peter and Pam in Tasmania recently.

Vale Peter Bushnell:

Many thanks to Brian Alderson, who has provided this great photo of Peter taken at a CPCW dinner, and to Hue Ng who resurrected an article from the Independent Herald of August 29th 2018 showing Peter at the back of a group who were undertaking one of the early Friday forays.

Walk Details for Wednesday 16th April:

This Week's Walks:  It is school holidays, so we are taking the opportunity of heading into the southern suburbs hoping that the morning traffic will be a lot less than it generally is.   All three walks are in Berhampore. The FF walk is an old walk, but the SSs and the PPs get a slight revision to walks we used nearly three years ago.  Last time the PPs got a little lost, so this year's has been simplified a bit.  The walks are to start at 9:20am from the designated starting point.

PPs:   A 4.00km loop walk taking in a view of Village on the Park and some of the Newtown shops and a small bit of the City to Sea walkway.  On footpaths and park tracks.  You can see the walk here.

SSs:  A 4.99km loop walking past Southern Cross Hospital, Wellington Hospital, Village on the Park and Wakefield Hospital.  Incudes a bit of a walk in the park as well. Only minor hills.  You can see the walk here.

FFs:   A 7.03km loop taking in streets and tracks in Macalister Park and surrounds and, of course, it includes some hills.    You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.

Parking:  The parking for all three groups is alongside Liardet Street Park in Liardet Street.  Liardet Street Park is the park at the rear of Macalister Park.  There is more than enough parking for our three groups.  (Can be accessed via main roads or by coming through Brooklyn.)

Coffee:  This is walker's own choice.  Walkers could organise a small group and head to a coffee bar on the way home or just return to Simmer or Thyme.

Happy walking.

Russell Paterson

CPCW Photos

Wednesday was a local walk in the suburbs of Grenada Village, Paparangi, Newlands and Johnsonville - with a touch of Glenside added in for the FFs!

Photos of the SSs and FFs have been provided by Paul Alpe and John Houghton:

On Thursday, the walkers completed a shorter walk than usual and then adjourned to the Innkeeper in Johnsonville to celebrate Duncan McMillan's recent birthday.  Photos have been provided by Hue Ng and Brian Alderson.  Hue's photo suggests that the group have been outfitted with light sabres and are prepared to do battle with whatever - or whoever - they  might encounter!!  Must have been a particularly dangerous walk as usually Red is sufficient protection for the group...

On Friday, walkers were led out by Keith Thomas on a walk from Onepoto around the coast of Whitereia Park, over the hill and along the Titahi Bay beach and then up and over another hill before a descent to Titahi Bay Road via some bush scrambling, blackberry, burnt out cars and a cemetery.  13.3km of very varied territory!  Photos taken by Bill Gaudie:

Home Page:  Don't forget to take a quick look at the “Home Page” - there is usually a new photo each week.
