Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 6th April 2025

Last week:

I am pleased to announce that Mike Drain has agreed to join the CPCW Committee. It has been a while since the Pleasure Pacers have been represented on the committee and I look forward to Mike contributing to our discussions and planning.

This week we welcomed three new walkers on Wednesday:  Jenny Vial, Charlie Dunbar and Angali. We hope that you enjoyed your walks and we look forward to seeing you regularly in the future. There were healthy numbers on Wednesday for the walk around Ngaio/Khandallah:  2 PPs, 40 SSs and 28 FFs making a total of 70.  Christine reported that on Thursday 'six brave souls walked around Churton Park on a rather drizzly evening'. Not to be outdone, the next day seven Friday walkers donned togs and raincoats to walk in Spicers Forest.

There was a good turn out on Friday evening (I think I counted 22 people) for drinks at the Sprig and Fern, although there were several other groups also there and conditions were a little cramped. As a trial, the May drinks will be held at the Johnsonville Club and on the second Friday (Friday 9 May). From June onwards the Friday drinks will revert to the first Friday of the month.

Walk Details for Wednesday 9th April:

This Week's Walks:  Three new walks this week; all are in an area we know well.  The schedule describes them as in Horokiwi/Grenada, but perhaps they are more Newlands/Paparangi.  One starts in Grenada Drive and all start near to Grenada Village.  The Horokiwi walks planned need a bit more checking and perhaps are better suited to summer.

There are two separate parking areas so please check the parking for your group.  The two parking areas are reasonably close to each other. The walks are to start at 9:20am from the designated starting point.

The Walks:

PPs:   A 3.92km walk with a loop walk and a there and back.  On footpaths and accessways.  A shortcut is available.    You can see the walk here.  Parking for PPs is in the carpark within Seton Nossiter Park which is accessed off Mark Avenue.  If full, there is ample parking on the street in the same general area.  This is also a parking area we have used many times in the past.

SSs:  A 5.15km walk with a loop and a there and back.  Like the FF walk,  it does include some uphill streets.    You can see the walk here.  Parking for SSs is also in the carpark within Seton Nossiter Park which is accessed off Mark Avenue.  If full, there is ample parking on the street in the same general area.  This is also a parking area we have used many times in the past.

FFs:   A 7.75km loop walk. A reasonably long walk this week and it certainly has quite a few uphill climbs, but only at the normal uphill street gradients.  You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.  Parking for FFs is alongside the roundabout at the intersection of Grenada Drive and Mark Avenue.  There is heaps of street parking available along Grenada Drive if there is no room in the parking area.

Coffee:   We will let Simmer know that a group of us will be coming for coffee and perhaps a snack.  Thyme, I think, is still open and available too.

CPCW Photos

Wednesday saw a very large group of walkers head out around the streets of Khandallah.  Views out over the harbour and city were stunning on a calm Wellington morning.

Photos of the SSs and FFs have been provided by Peter Bushnell and Gay Hoffman:

Thursday's walkers were out in Churton Park again.  Gillian Mills has kindly provided photos of the group who look prepared for whatever the weather might throw at them.  Check out Friday's walkers to see what it did actually throw!!

Jane Gaudie, who was co-ordinating Friday's walk, decided that the forecast was not favourable for the planned Te Au walk.  She substituted a walk in Spicer Forest, Porirua - supposedly "sheltered" from the weather.  Here a a couple of photos provided by Clint Davis of the "drowned rats"!!  Now that's what I call a commitment to walking. smiley

Home Page:  Don't forget to take a quick look at the “Home Page” - there is usually a new photo each week.

Walkers: please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link.  Preferably use a small size (around 450kb).
