Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 30th March 2025

Last week:

It was a good week for walking. On Wednesday 60 people tackled walks in Whitby. Eight Thursday evening walkers completed a 7km walk in Tawa and on Friday 15 walkers travelled to the south coast for a walk in the Owhiro Bay/Red Rocks area.

The end of this month sees the transition from the previous CPCW Committee to the new one.  Brian Vincent is standing down as Convenor after two years as Deputy Convenor and a further two years as Convenor.  Paul Alpe is also relinquishing his role as Membership Secretary after many, many years on the committee. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank both Brian and Paul for their unstinting service to the walking group. A remarkable feature of our walking group is the high level of organization and communication and this is only possible because of the dedication of people like Brian and Paul who so freely give of their time and expertise.

I take over the reins as Convenor this week and welcome onto the committee Rowena Rowe who has accepted the challenge of filling Paul's shoes by undertaking the role of Membership Secretary.  Bill Gaudie has accepted the position of Deputy Convenor as well as continuing with the newsletter and website. I am absolutely delighted that Rowena and Bill have accepted these positions.  Thankfully, Helen and Keith are continuing their responsibilities with Wednesday Walks and Finances.

Friday Night Drinks:

A reminder that Friday night drinks for April will be held at Sprig and Fern in Tawa on 4th April at the usual time.

Convenor

Walk Details for Wednesday 2nd April:

This Week's Walks:   Autumn has arrived.  Walking continues.  This week we are over to the neighbouring suburb of Khandallah.  The walks start at Nairnville Park and take in the streets to the north-east.  These are walks we have enjoyed in the past, but all three have been reversed from the way we last walked them.  The walks are to start at 9:20am from the designated starting point.

The Walks:

PPs:   A 3.97km loop walk on footpaths and accessways.    You can see the walk here.

SSs:  A 5.39km loop walk also on footpaths and accessways.    You can see the walk here.

FFs :  A 6.34km loop walk. This walk is similar to the SSs, but dives further down the hill.      You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.

Parking:  Parking is at Nairnville Park and surrounding streets; our normal parking for Khandallah walks.

Coffee:   This is your own choice.  If you can organise a small group of your fellow walkers, all the better.   There are a couple of choices in Khandallah, several in J’ville and, of course, Thyme and Simmer back home.

CPCW Photos

Wednesday's walkers gathered in significant numbers to enjoy walks around Whitby.  While the numbers were good - 60 in total - there must have been a bit of memory fade amongst the PPs and SSs as no photos were forthcoming from these groups. sad  The happiness of your editor is dependent upon you all sending in your photos...

Thank you to Gay Hoffman for your reliability in providing good photos of the FFs:

Our Thursday walkers are also always dependable when it comes to providing photos. smiley  This week there are two photos provided by Gillian Mills and Hue Ng of the group walking around Tawa:

Friday's walkers were led by Clint Davis around Red Rocks on the south coast and up the hill; and up the hill; and up the hill; only to eventually come down again.  Such is the essence of a Friday walk.  As you will see from the photos, the weather was not exactly clear at the outset - perhaps "atmospheric" is the appropriate term!  Photos are courtesy of Clint, Gay Hoffman and Keith Thomas:

Home Page:  Don't forget to take a quick look at the “Home Page” - there is usually a new photo each week.

Walkers: please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link.  Preferably use a small size (around 450kb).
