Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 2nd March 2025

Last week:

We had a lot of positive feedback about the walks that the 33 participating walkers undertook last Wednesday.  The numbers were lower than has been the case in recent weeks, no doubt due to the odd shower that passed overhead earlier in the morning. Combining the walks with a train ride was a winner!  As always our thanks must go to those who prepare and map out our regular walks – we have a great variety during each year and this is undoubtedly reflected in the success of our Community group.  The Thursday walkers stayed in Churton Park last week and 7 members walked 7.3km around the suburb.  On Friday 20 walkers completed approximately 13km walking the Northland/Botanic Gardens and Kelburn loop.

We have a number of our group venturing to Tasmania this week and thanks are extended to those staying home who have volunteered to look after each group on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  May I give just a gentle reminder to take a photo of those walking for our records and, also, if you could please send the numbers in each group through to our email address with a copy to Paul Alpe.

Finally, a reminder that the 7th March Sprig and Fern booking has been cancelled as quite a number of the ‘regular attendees’ will be in Tasmania.

Walk Details for Wednesday 5th March:

This Week's Walks:  We are still walking this coming Wednesday even though we have twenty to thirty walkers in Tasmania.  Popular Plimmerton and its coast has been selected for ths Wednesday's walks.   The walks will start at 9:20am from the designated starting point.

The Walks:

PPs:   A 3.67km there and back walk with a loop.   A pleasant walk along the coast then a loop within a park and back again via the same bit of coast.  You can see the walk here.

SSs:   A 4.37km walk.  The walk may look a bit shorter than usual but it does include a little bit of elevation.  (Nothing too steep)  The walk also takes in the coast.  You can see the walk here.

FFs:   A 7.58km walk.  This is a variation of a walk done quite a few times.  It is always popular as it has a mix of interesting coastline and rural areas not too distant.  You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.

Parking:   It is proposed that the parking for the walks is in the area alongside Plimmerton Domain and also the empty site alongside the Palmers Garden Centre.

Coffee:   Nothing has been booked as we are not sure how many walkers there will be with so many walkers in Tasmania.  However, Palmers Garden Centre with its cafĂ© is an obvious first choice unless it seems too busy.  There are other choices on the way home.

Russell Paterson

Reminder

Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Cancellations

If the walks are cancelled an email will be sent out as early as possible but definitely before 8:00am.

CPCW Photos

Wednesday saw the walkers combine a journey on public transport with a walk.  It was meant to showcase the Johnsonville railway line, but the FFs, being a lazy bunch, couldn't be bothered walking from Nairnville Park to the station.  They crossed the road and caught the bus!

Photos of the SSs and FFs have been provided by Brian Vincent and Russell Paterson respectively.  Keith Thomas provided the photo of our incoming CPCW Convenor outside an appropriate Wadestown establishment.

(Editorial note:  Ever the pedant, I am tempted to try some image manipulation on Keith's photo - the sign on the hairstylists' premises omits the necessary apostrophe which offends me greatly!)

Thursday's group walked around Churton Park.  It appears from the photos that they scared the local kids from Churton Park away from their playground to commandeer all  the equipment!  What a naughty bunch!  Thanks, again, to Gillian Mills who provided the photos:

On Friday the walkers were provided with a route that meandered around Wilton, Northland and Thorndon and included a visit to parliament.  As it was drawn up by Gary Dick it included every set of steps in the vicinity!  Gary had organised a day that was "one out of the box" and the views over Wellington were stunning - not so much as a ripple on the reflective surface of the harbour.  Wendy Bentley provided the first photo of the "A Team" - on a set of steps, of course - and Keith Thomas provided the photo of the second group who, I presume, must be the "B Team" (B standing for "better").

And the advance party of CPCW 'scouts', who are already in Hobart, sent through this photo taken at the top of Mt Wellington.  I note that there are clouds - not like Wellington!!  Thanks to John Houghton who sent through this photo, though it seems he may have co-opted assistance from another visitor.

Home Page:  Don't forget to take a quick look at the “Home Page” - there is usually a new photo each week.

Walkers: please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link.  Preferably use a small size (around 450kb).
