Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 12th January 2025

Welcome to 2025 and the first newsletter of the year.  I hope that your festive indulgences have been offset by some good walks irrespective of the challenging weather.  Wednesday January 15th brings the first organised Wednesday walks of the year - weather permitting - and in the notice below you will see some bonus walks that David Pegram is planning.

In the absence of any reports on walks, you might like to take a look at this link to the Independent Herald in 2013 provided by Brian Alderson:  click here for the link to some nostalgia!   The Churton Park group of walkers has certainly continued to grow.

May 2025 bring good health and happiness to you and your family.

Walk Details for Wednesday 15th January:

This Week's Walks:  Happy New Year to all walkers.  The organised walks have started again for the 2025 year.  This first week has us heading to Titahi Bay. The walks for all three groups are repeats of walks undertaken in the past.   The SSs and the FFs take in the eastern coast of Titahi Bay and the PPs enjoy the beach on the western coast of Titahi Bay.

All walks will start at 9:20am from the designated parking area.

PPs:  A 4.56km loop that is generally flat.  There is a choice of whether to walk along the beach or use the track that runs parallel to the beach.  The return to the parking area is via local streets and a playing field.  You can see the walk here

SSs:  A 7.65km walk that uses the same there and back track to the start of a loop that takes in the coast and returns over the central hill to the start/end of the loop.  If walkers want to avoid the hill that is part of the loop they could just return the way they have come from the point where the uphill path starts. You can see the walk here

FFs:  An 8.22km loop walk that includes the coastal track and then up the road and a return to the parking via the local streets.  As it is a walk we have all done before it is open to any variations that add distance or additional climbs.  You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here

Parking:  Parking for all three groups is in the large carpark at the start of Onepoto Road. (Our usual parking area next to the Porirua Rowing Club.)

Coffee:  We have told Columbus Coffee, Mitre 10 Mega, Porirua that a good number of us will be arriving for coffee and perhaps a snack.

On the last Wednesday walk of 2024 walkers headed out and about in Ngaio/Khandallah.  There were 5 PPs, 30 SSs and 22 FFs getting out for their exercise in preparation for their Christmas dinner one week on.

Thank you to Paul Alpe for the photo of the SSs and to Hue Ng for her photo of Ross and Annette who decided that they would abandon the SSs and tag on at the end of the FFs!

A group of 12 Friday walkers headed out this week for their first walk of 2025.   The ascent of some 680m seemed worthwhile when we made it to the top of the Belmont Trig - it was a stunning day and there was no wind.  But having walked all the way from Mark Ave in Grenada Village to the top of Horokiwi Road, did we really need to go all the way to the valley floor before climbing back up to the trig!!??  Membership of the Friday walkers requires an element of masochism - or maybe they have all just lost their marbles.laughlaugh  These photos were taken by Bill Gaudie (who definitely has as few marbles as he has hair!):
