Churton Park Community Walkers

 Newsletter 15th June 2025

Last week:

The tables were turned this week with the Thursday evening walkers getting the best weather deal, enjoying calm conditions for their 5.8km walk to Johnsonville and back. Some intrepid walkers defied the Wednesday weather forecasters and discovered that, sometimes, the forecasters are actually correct. Friday saw more hardy souls tackle the slopes of Te Ahumairangi/Tinakori Hill in damp, but not arctic, conditions.

This week's walk will be preceded by a gold coin donation in aid of Wellington Free Ambulance. Some walkers will have already made their donation at the recent CPR course and should feel no pressure for a further contribution. All donations, whether they be silver, gold or folding, will be accepted gratefully.

Gold Coin Walks

Occasionally one of the walking group has needed the services of Wellington Free Ambulance and it has been suggested that we make a donation to support them.  Before the walk on Wednesday 18 June we will be passing the hat around for any gold coin you might like to contribute.  If this is successful we will repeat it at Christmas.

 CPCW 12th Anniversary Dinner

The 12th CPCW Anniversary Dinner will be held on Saturday July 19th 2025, 6.00pm at Johnsonville Bowling Club, 34 Frankmore Avenue, Johnsonville.

Catering will be by Dunsheas Deli of Khandallah.  Drinks can be purchased from the bar.  Please bring cash for the raffle. The proceeds from the raffle are our only income for the year and offset the running costs of the walking group.

The cost of the dinner is $45 per person.  Please make payment to, CPCW BNZ A/C:  02-0524-0233091-000. (This bank account number changed two years ago - if you have CPCW Bank Details saved please ensure it is the current account number.)

Payment is due by Saturday 5th July, but payment asap would be helpful for organisational purposes.

Walk Details for Wednesday 18th June 2025

This Week's Walks:  Windy and wet weather again last Wednesday, so no walks.  This week we head out to Titahi Bay for walks that are variations of walks in the past.  All use the beach track.  If the weather is suitable the beach can be used instead of the beach track.  These walks are to start at 9:20am from the designated starting point.

PPs:   A 5.04km loop walk on streets, walkways and a beach track.  Nothing too steep. The walk can be readily shortened by walkers if they so decide.  You can see the walk here.

SSs:  A 6.49km loop walk on streets, walkways and beach track.  Some climbs, but nothing too steep. You can see the walk here.

FFs:  A 7.54km loop walk on streets, beach track and walkways and including 2 or 3 climbs.  Nothing too steep. You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.

Parking:  Parking for all three groups is in the large carpark by the Porirua Rowing Club in Onepoto Road - our usual parking for Titahi Bay walks.

Coffee:  We have informed Columbus Coffee in Mitre 10 Mega, Porirua, that a good number of us will be arriving for coffee etc.

Happy walking.

CPCW PHOTOS

Wednesday walks were cancelled due to the rain for the second week in a row. frown  As David has said, there was a small group who decided that maybe the weather was not so bad and they would venture forth.  Conditions were good when they arrived in Whitby and they felt suitably smug.  Half-way through the walk, when the skies had opened and rivulets of water were pouring along the gutters, the smug smiles were nowhere to be seen.  There was an option to shorten the walk, but they were already so very wet that it hardly mattered.

Here are a couple of photos taken before the rain started, both taken by your editor.  The second photo may seem strange, but I want to show that I got to the top of the hill before Barry!!  (Spoiler - I had organised an urgent phone call for him half-way up the hill to hobble him.  It worked and I shall have to try similar nefarious tricks on future walks!!)

Rowena Rowe has provided these photos of the recent Friday night drinks at the Johsonville Club complete with captions:

Barry  won a smashing hamper, filled with great goodies.  We thought he might share it with our group, perhaps as entrees.  Last seen being put into the Prosser's car.

Clint Davis enjoying his lamb shank meal.  He said he need the protein, fat and carbs after the Friday walk!  The Guinness was his treat!

And a couple of photos Rowena provided of CPCW members enjoying drinks on a cold, wet, windy Wellington evening:

Thanks to all those who joined us, especially to those who joined us for the first time.

Thursday walkers headed out from Churton Park to Johnsonville and return.  Near identical photos have been provided by Gillian Mills and Duncan McMillan.  The participants held their poses pretty well, though something may have distracted Red!

This week Gary Dick plotted a route taking in parts of Wilton, Wadestown and Northland, including a dastardly stroll up the full length of Weld Street, Wadestown, starting downhill where even the cars dare not venture.  Photos of the two groups were taken by Keith Thomas and Wendy Bentley.  Might we assume that Wendy's group, which she titled "Merv's Marvels", did actually do a walk before deserving food and drink??
