Churton Park Community Walkers

      Newsletter 8th June 2025

      Last week:

A massive 'thank you' to Jane for organising the CPR course on Wednesday. Thirty people attended and the overwhelming feeling at the end of the session from people who had done the course before was that their knowledge had been refreshed and their confidence boosted. For others, like me, who had not done a CPR course before, we left with the confidence and knowledge needed to help in a crisis if we were needed. A surprising outcome of the morning was the suggestion by one attendee that male walkers should prepare before each walk by shaving their chests in order to cut down the  preparation time before applying defibrillator pads. She has offered to get to walks early, organise the line-up of males and do the inspection.

The Thursday evening walkers were back to full strength this week walking the streets of Newlands. On Friday I took the opportunity to join the morning edition of 'The Chase' at Battle Hill. Disappointingly, it ended with me having to announce that 'The Chase is over - you have not been caught' (and in fact by quite a margin).  (Ed:  David does himself a disservice - he was up with the GBK clique who are always setting the pace and, frustratingly, doing so effortlessly!!)

Friday drinks saw record numbers again (37) at the Johnsonville Club on what was not the best of nights for venturing out. Thanks to Rowena for organising this once again. We look forward to the Johnsonville Club hosting us on the first Friday of the month for the rest of the year.

Happy walking.

Gold Coin Walks

Occasionally one of the walking group has needed the services of Wellington Free Ambulance and it has been suggested that we make a donation to support them.  Before the walk on Wednesday 18 June we will be passing the hat around for any gold coin you might like to contribute.  If this is successful we will repeat it at Christmas.

CPCW Photos

Wednesday walks were abandoned due to weather, but the Thursday crew headed out in Newlands.  Thanks to Duncan McMillan and Hue Ng for their photos - almost identical, apart from the stars of the photos!

The photos for the Thurday walk one week earlier arrived a little late for inclusion in last week's newsletter.  But the very hardy walkers out that night were keen to prove that they did, in fact, go out on that wet evening. Thanks to Duncan McMillan for bravely removing his phone from the safety of his pocket!  I think I would have been worried if I was managing Churton Park New World that night and I came across the two characters in the first photo - they don't look to be up to much good!!

Despite a dodgy forecast, Friday walkers enjoyed a pleasant morning "strolling" across the dales and paddocks of Battle Hill on a walk plotted by Clint Davis.  With the deforestation progressing on the other side of Transmission Gully, walks at Battle Hill are restricted in range, but Clint did a brilliant job of plotting a 12km walk on the west side of the highway and including ascents totaling 440m.  Some of them felt a lot more!!

Photos were taken by John Houghton, Clint Davis and Bill Gaudie.
