Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 4th May 2025

Last week:

The atrocious weather put paid to most of the walking this week, however 26 hardy souls (15 SSs, 11 FFs) defied the weather gods on Wednesday and completed the planned local walks. Ginny reported that Red was relieved that the Thursday evening walk was cancelled as he was fretting about getting his hair messed up and Jane made the easy call to cancel the Friday walk.

A huge 'thank you' to Rowena for organising drinks on Friday at the Johnsonville Club. Despite the tail end of the storm, which was still making leaving the warmth of a snug house a daunting prospect, the drinks were extremely well attended. If you have yet to voice your opinion on which drinks venue you prefer, please have a word with Rowena, or one of the committee, on the walk next week.

Walk Details for Wednesday 7th May:

This Week's Walks:    Off to Karori for this week's walks.  These are a reversal of the SS and FF walks carried out two years ago. The walks are all on footpaths thereby avoiding any worrying surfaces.   The walks are to start at 9:20am from the designated starting point.

PPs:   A 4.48km loop walk around the streets of Karori.  Generally flat, but with a few minor rises.  You can see the walk here.

SSs:  A 6.35km loop walk around the streets of Karori.  All on good surfaces.  It includes some easy climbs. You can see the walk here.

FFs:   A 7.41km loop walk taking in some uphill roads towards the hills, but nothing very steep.  You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.

Parking:   Parking is in Samuel Parnell Road where there is a good number of parks and, when that is full, the surrounding streets.

Coffee:   We will advise Karori Park Café that a number of us will be arriving for coffee and perhaps a snack.  They usually cope with our numbers fairly well.

Our Sponsors:

We have a number of sponsors which we list on our Home Page and in our Newsletter.  In recognition of the generosity of our sponsors, the committee has decided to also highlight one sponsor each week.  This week we have chosen Shoe Clinic Porirua as our featured sponsor:

Shoe Clinic Porirua, located in North City Shopping Centre, Porirua, are an owner-operated store specialising in shoes for active wear.  They go the extra mile to ensure that their customers get the right shoe for their feet and their activity (in the case of CPCW members, walking!) and that the shoes are fitted correctly.  If you purchase shoes from Shoe Clinic Porirua, and let them know that you are a member of CPCW, they will provide you with a discount of $20 and also donate 10% of the cost to CPCW.  They provide a 30 day money-back guarantee on their footwear (Ts & Cs apply - see website).

CPCW encourage you to support Shoe Clinic Porirua - they are longstanding, and very generous, sponsors of CPCW and many of our members can attest to their excellent service.

CPCW Photos

Not a great week for walking, but a few hardy souls turned up on Wednesday - a group of SSs and FFs headed out on their routes and the remainder adjourned to Simmer for coffee.

Paul Alpe provided the photo of the gathering group and Russell Paterson provided the photo of the bedraggled FFs:

A group of hardy CPCW members headed off for a 4 day/3 night tramp in Whanganui National Park to walk the Matemateāonga Track earlier this week.  Clint Davis has provided these photos of the group and the spectacular scenery through which they walked (and sat in a jet boat on the river!).

Home Page:  Don't forget to take a quick look at the “Home Page” - there is another stunning photo of sunrise on the Matemateāonga Track taken by David Pegram.

Walkers: please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link.  Preferably use a small size (around 450kb).
