Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 17 March 2024

Hi everyone

Last week’s walks.

The three Wednesday groups enjoyed their walks around Whitby with 58 walkers undertaking the different courses.  On Thursday 8 walkers (plus Red) journeyed around Churton Park, including the zigzag track and the Erlestoke track.  The Friday walkers, a group of 6, went to Te Whiti Park.

A reminder about walking arrangements:

After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’.  Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group – please send them to both Bill Gaudie and Paul Alpe (and/or use our email address).

Finally, just a reminder to swap telephone numbers amongst those with whom you travel to the starting point each week. A handy back-up for any late changes to arrangements.

Brian Vincent.

Convenor.

Reminder:     Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Walk Details for Wednesday 20 March 2024.

This Week's Walks:  Again, a good turnout of Wednesday walkers found their way to the designated start point very efficiently and the walks got away at the designated time.  This week we are closer to home with all three walks in Newlands.  The PP’s and SS’s walks are new, but do cover old territory.

It is less than a 15 minute drive from Churton Park to our parking area.  Thus we are hoping to get all the walks underway by 9:15am - if you are organising shared transport try to leave Churton Park by 8:55am or earlier.

PPs: A 3.17km loop walk taking in a long stretch of a winding and slightly undulating bush track and returning via a park and a quite long street.  The walk is undulating, but nowhere is it steep.   A new walk for the PPs but in familiar territory.  You can see the walk here.

SSs:  A 5.50km loop.  This is a new walk, but takes in streets etc that have been walked before.  Incudes a “rural” loop to the Trig where there are great views and probably a bit of wind.  You can see the walk here.

FFs: An 8.00km loop walk taking in undulating streets and definitely includes a few hills. This is an old walk.  You can see the walk in NZMapometer here and on PlotaRoute here.

Parking: The meeting point and parking for all three groups is Ladbrooke Drive in Newlands; a place where we have parked many times before.  A long street with plenty of kerbside parking.

Coffee:  Nothing is booked but we will have told Simmer that a good number will come back there.  There is also Thyme on your way back home.

Photos

Walkers - please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link.  Preferably small size (around 450kb).  It has been great to receive a larger number of photos from PPs and SSs - keep them coming, please!

A selection of photos from the Wednesday walks around Whitby:

Here are Paul Alpe's photos of the group awaiting the arrival of Brian and his entourage:

And here are the "Ultra-fast Footers", including our beloved Convenor, Brian, who were delayed by a Whitby traffic-jam.  Who would have thought that "Auckland Affliction" had spread to the outer suburbs of Porirua!  At least the group don't look unduly stressed.  Thanks to Rod Stainer for this photo:

Spotted by Paul Alpe on the SS's walk:  Not sure whether it is a message related to the proverbial traffic issues before and after school or whether it might be an updated version of advice on what to do during an earthquake, but somebody has a sense of humour! And next to this is an image of the FFs taken by John Houghton on Wednesday's walk - not sure whether they are about to Kiss or Drop!

Thursday's walkers tackled tracks around Churton Park.  Thanks to Gillian Mills who has provided this photo taken overlooking our home suburb:

Gary Dick plotted a particularly gnarly walk in the hills above the Te Whiti Riser in Lower Hutt for the Friday walkers.  A distance of almost 17km and an ascent of 859m.  Next week Everest!  Thanks to Russell Paterson for the following two images:

And here they are having "knocked the bugger off"!!  Thanks to John Houghton for this one.
(Ed's comment:  they all look far too fresh, so I am a bit dubious about the stats for that walk; they probably just drove to the top of the Wainuiomata Hill, had a beer and took a photo!)
