Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 12 February 2023

Preliminary notice

We are organising a group outing to Somes Island on Wednesday 1 March.  East By West Ferries changed their timetable from 30 Jan 2023 and the previous 10am sailing has gone.  This means a slightly earlier start time to catch the 9.15am sailing.  Full details of timings and possible transport options next week.  Gold Card cannot be utilised on public transport before 9am, however the Government transport subsidies are still in place.  Gold Card can be used on the ferry.  Please email if you are interested in going, or contact the organiser 'Brian Alderson'.

Note that the usual Wednesday walks will still be available.

Last Weeks Walks

Apart from a minor walking incident the Wednesday walks in Maungaraki , and in perfect weather, went very well.  A good number headed to the local Benedicts Café immediately after finishing their walk.  There were a total of 61 walkers made up of 11 PP’s, 28 SS’s and 22 FF’s.  What follows is the weekly report for the walk of the Thursday Night Explorers.  The report reflects the great weather of Thursday Night. “Tonight we had 10 people walking to the top of Mt Kaukau from McLintock Street North – lovely evening for it and lots of others out as well, including sheep rabbits and dogs not to mention walkers joggers and cyclists.”

On Friday 22 Friday Walkers headed to the South Coast for a walk which turned out to be more than expected but not really in a good way as the walk involved boulders, swamps, rocks, and an incident.  In spite of this the walkers all enjoyed their interesting day’s walk.

This Weeks Walks

This Week we are in Khandallah again.  All three walks are new walks but do include areas that we have walked before perhaps except for a recent track that is included in the SS’s and FF’s walks.

PP’s: A 3.46 loop track around the streets of Khandallah and Ngaio.  Generally flat and the few hills are reasonably gentle.   You can see the walk here.

SS’s: A 5.46km loop taking in a recently constructed bush track with the balance around the streets.  The walk includes a few hills  but nothing too steep.   You can see the walk here.

FF’s: A 6.66km loop taking in a recently constructed bush track with the balance around the streets. It does include some climbs.  You can see the walk here.

Parking

As per usual the parking for the Khandallah Walks is the carpark of Nairnville Park and also has to include the nearby streets.

Coffee

Back at Simmer.  We have told Simmer that a good number of us will be calling in for a coffee.

Website

When you open the website to view your walk have a quick look at the “Home Page”.  This usually has a new picture each week generally showing a view from one of our walks.

Cancellation

If the walks are cancelled an email will be sent out as early as possible but definitely before 8:00am.

Happy February Walking

Koha

Every week we leave a note about Koha in the newsletter.  We have no idea what private sharing arrangements are in place regarding getting rides but we trust that those who don’t regularly bring cars do make up for it in some small way, be it buying a coffee for the driver or by making some small cash donation.

Photos

Below are some photos from the week before last.  Walkers please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to peter@jville.kiwi preferably small size (around 450kb).

Now, there must be a track here somewhere.
Ah, here it is!
