Current Wednesday Walk

Convenor’s Comment

General

Thank you to all who have so far let us view their Vaccine Pass and have let us record that their status is fully vaccinated. No information other than the fact that the pass has been viewed is recorded.  The process is just part of our endeavour to make our walks as safe as possible for all those taking part.  We would love to have a 100% record that would allow us to know that we have indeed made our walking group as safe as we can from Delta etc.  So please show Paul your pass or send a screen shot to our email site; ChurtonParkCW@gmail.com.

First Aid Kits

During the Christmas break we will endeavour to check these out and update them and replace missing bits etc.  As this weeks walks are the last for the year, please hand these in at the end of this weeks walks.  Please hand them to Russell, Paul, Trevor or Jane.

Last Weeks Walks

The exceptional heavy rain of Monday and Tuesday meant that the PP’s and SS’s routes had to be adjusted to be clear of muddy slippery tracks.  The FF’s walk was already only on roads and formed paths.  The turnout was reasonably good for these Khandallah walks with 11 PP’s, 23 SS’s and 19 FF’s taking part.  (A total of 53 walkers.)  On Thursday night 4 Thursday Night Walkers headed out around the streets of Grenada, and on Friday, 19 Friday Walkers toured the streets and hills of Raroa, Khandallah, Broadmeadows, Kaiwharawhara and Ngaio after the original walk in the McKays Crossing area was deemed unsuitable.

DD’s

Last week an email appeared suggesting the our walk figures were incorrect as it did not include the two DD’s.  We all know who the 2 DD’s are, we just have not worked out what DD is short for.  So can Darrell or Sylvia let us know what it is short for.  If the two DD’s are not recorded as part of the PP’s, then we might have to add a subset for the occasions this group of two hit the streets.

Away Trip 2022

It’s a long way off yet but with the trip attracting large numbers of walkers we need to book accommodation well in advance.  We have decided to adopt a pattern of alternating away trips at ‘home’, in the North Island, with ventures to the rest of the world.  As we were in the North Island in 2021 it means we are in the rest of the world in 2022!

We have looked at a number of proposals made by away trip participants this year and although Sydney is very attractive we have decided on Motueka.  We will be staying at the Top 10 Holiday Park which has a good range of self-contained accommodation.  The advantage of staying at a holiday park is that we get access to a meeting area but the disadvantage is that we will again be looking for volunteers to share accommodation.  At Motueka we need to fill a three bedroom apartment (which has two bathrooms), and three motels that each have two bedrooms.  The rest of the units are studio motels.

The Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks are both accessible from Motueka and possibly Nelson Lakes too but there is also good walking to be had in the Nelson area so we will be spoilt for choice. We will decide on the exact programme of walks nearer to the time.

The trip is for five nights arriving in Motueka on Monday 7 November and departing Saturday 12 November.

The trip is open to walkers of all abilities but on the condition that:

1.   You or your partner is a regular participant in CPCW walks

2.   Your covid vaccinations are up to date (by November 2022 this year this may well include a booster jab)

3.   If you will not have your own vehicle to Motueka you have made prior arrangements with a walker of similar ability to transport you to and from walks.

We will be holding a briefing meeting on Wednesday 19 January at 8 Dormar Place Churton Park, PPs and SSs at 4pm, FFs at 5pm. Couples with feet in both camps and those who are willing to share accommodation with friends can take their pick.  RSVP to David Pegram so that we know how many chairs we need.  Following the meeting a deposit will be required for the accommodation.  In the meantime if you have any questions please do not hesitate to email.

Photos

Here is the collection of photos from last week.  Walkers please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to peter@jville.kiwi preferably small size (around 450kb).

General

As per the schedule this week’s walks all begin at Te Whiti Park in Lower Hutt.  These walks which all include the Te Whiti Riser track are the last Wednesday Walks for the year.  They are walks that we have completed before.  As with the last time we did these walks we will endeavour (weather permitting) to have a picnic under the trees as we successfully did last time we were here.  So please bring a chair or rug or waterproof sheet.  (If the weather does not play its part, we can just head to Mitre 10 Mega Petone and see how they cope with our numbers.)

Te Whiti Park  and this general area was named after Te Whiti o Rongomai lll who was a Māori Spiritual Leader of the 1850’s and 1860’s.

The walk is the same start and end for all groups and heads up the track known as the Te Whiti Riser.  This is a track with gradual incline, walkers can go as far along as they want to - recommended to go at least until the bridge lookout over the valley. FF’s can go over the hill, SS’s to go to the top and the PP’s as far up as they wish before they turn around.  You can view the walk here.

Parking

Parking is in Riverside Drive Central which is on the North West side of Te Whiti Park.  (Riverside Drive Central runs off Guthrie Street which is off White Lines East.)

Coffee

We will endeavour to have a picnic.  Bring your chair or rug and perhaps a Thermos and a snack.

Cancellation

The normal cancellation before 8:00am will be sent by email if required.

Happy walking

Koha

Remember that if you rely on others for your transport most weeks then a small $2 payment for a nearby walk and a $4 payment for a longer walk would help to lessen the costs a little for those providing the transport.
