Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 30 October 2022

Friday Night “Drinkies”

These will be held this coming Friday Night 4th of November being the first Friday of the Month.  Usual time, usual place – that is 5:00pm at the “Sprig and Fern, Tawa”.

Last Weeks Walks

The trip to the near side of town went better for us than the previous week.  We might try to avoid going to the other side of town as much as we can from now on except for the school holidays when we should be able to take advantage of the lower traffic numbers.  Anyway a good number took the trip to the Botanical Gardens with some 15 PP’s, 26 SS’s and 24 FF’s (a total of 65 walkers) taking part.  Come Thursday evening some 7 Thursday Night Crawlers toured Churton Park using mainly off road tracks and of course some streets.  Friday Walkers decided on a local walk which had 28 walkers circumnavigating Churton Park using ridge lines wherever possible.

Christmas Lunch

Yet still another reminder that the date for the Christmas Lunch is Thursday 1st  December 2022.  This will again be at “The Pines”.  The price is the same as last year, that is $40 per head and the bus will also be available at $10 per head.  (For those who need more time to make a decision on whether they will be coming or not, then we would need to know by the date that has been set by the Caterer for final numbers and that is Thursday 17th November)  Confirmation at least should be made as soon as possible by email and online payment can be made to the Churton Park Community Walkers Bank Account No: 02-0524-0233091-000 using name/s and CPCW X dinner as reference.  We definitely have a starting quorum.

This Weeks Walks (Wednesday 2 November)

We are avoiding town this week and heading north to one our favourite walking areas.  That is Titahi Bay with the walks being slight variations of previous walks and the FF’s taking on the suggestion of one of the Walk Committee.  Parking for all three groups is in different areas of Whitireia Park but we are all within golf driving distance of each other.

PP’s: A 4.11km walk which is a combination of two out and back flat walks.  Firstly heading west from the carpark along the coast until the coastal track runs out and then return to the carpark and then head east around the coast as far as you like and then return to the cars.      You can view the walk here.

Parking for the PP's is in the very obvious coastal carpark just east of the coastal toilet block.  Head along Titahi Bay Main Road, turn right into Bay Road, then left into Thornley Street and continue on this road into Whitireia Park (becomes Whitireia Road) and down to the coast, turn right at the bottom of the road and you will find the carpark about 200m along the road.

SS’s: A 5.31km loop walk on tracks around the coast and including an up and over hill.  You can view the walk here.

Parking for the SS's. Head along Titahi Bay Main Road, turn right into Bay Road, left into Thornley Street and continue on this road into Whitireia Park (becomes Whitireia Road) and down to the coast, turn left and go as far as the road will let you then park.

FF’s: A 6.80km Hugh Butcher loop walk on tracks with some climbs.  You can view the walk here.

Parking for the FF’s:  Parking is within the flat areas of Whitireia Park which previously contained the  buildings.  See the map starting point as this is also the parking area.

Parking

As above for each group.

Coffee

For all this will be at Mitre 10 Mega, Porirua.  They will be warned that a good number of us will be coming (take your coat in case you have to sit within the garden area of the CafĂ©).

General

We know a lot of you go directly to the walk site.  We ask that you be patient and wait for the others to arrive.  We still need to have the 9:00am briefing at the New World car park as there are some that need to ask for rides and occasionally we need to make new walkers welcome.

Website

When you open the website to view your walk have a quick look at the “Home Page”.  This usually has a new picture each week generally showing a view from one of our walks.

Cancellation

If the walks are cancelled an email will be sent out as early as possible but definitely before 8:00am.

Happy November Walking

Koha

Every week we leave a note about Koha in the newsletter.  We have no idea what private sharing arrangements are in place regarding getting rides but we trust that those who don’t regularly bring cars do make up for it in some small way, be it buying a coffee for the driver or by making some small cash donation.

Walk Schedules

You can look at the walk schedule for the rest of November here.

Photos

Below are some photos from the week before last.  Walkers please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to peter@jville.kiwi preferably small size (around 450kb).
