Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter April 7th 2024

Last week’s walks:

We had another good turnout of walkers on Wednesday for the walks around Aotea (12 Pleasure Pacers, 28 Steady Steppers and 22 Fast Footers, for a total of 62!).  Three keen walkers (and Red) ventured out in the wet conditions on Thursday evening for a walk from Churton Park to Johnsonville and return - a total of 5.8km.  Then, on Friday, fewer than the usual number (six walkers) journeyed to Owhiro Bay for their walk along Sinclair Head/Red Rocks.

A reminder about walking arrangements:

After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’.  Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group – please send them to both Bill Gaudie and Paul Alpe (and/or use our email address).

Finally, just a reminder to swap telephone numbers amongst those with whom you travel to the starting point each week. A handy back-up for any late changes to arrangements.

Reminder:   Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Walk Details for Wednesday April 10th 2024:

This Week's Walks:  This week we are off to Pukerua Bay.  Google says that the drive to Pukerua Bay from Churton Park is 18 minutes.  Thus those arranging rides from Churton Park should leave at or before 9:00am with walks to get away from the designated start point (parking) at 9:25am.  Any car pooling that can be arranged would help with the parking in Pukerua Bay. (As seen last week, the best laid parking plans can be scuttled by unknown street construction works.) Last time we walked here some of the SSs found some uphill steps a bit of a worry; so their walk is a revised walk and does not take in that difficult part of the old walk. All walks include some sort of hill, but nothing too steep.

PP’s:  A 3.00km loop walk that takes in a part of the Escarpment Walk.  In general, a good quality track, footpath or quiet roadway. The walk takes in some of the residential streets and lifestyle blocks of Pukerua Bay. You can see the walk here.

SS’s:   A 5.94km loop taking in the streets and tracks of Pukerua Bay. The walk includes a beach walk with the rest on footpaths and tracks. You can see the walk here.

FF’s:  A 6.98km loop taking in the streets and tracks of Pukerua Bay.  There is a side track loop that takes walkers up to a viewpoint with views over the sea, hills and cliffs.  (Last time this side loop was neglected by walkers.) As always, the walk does include several hills.  You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on PlotaRoute here.

Parking:  On reaching the start of the Pukerua Bay residential area take the first left into Teihana Road West and then right into Rawhiti Road and park somewhere between the Bowling Club and the school or nearby.

Coffee:  The cafĂ© within Palmers Garden Centre in Plimmerton is the choice for coffee for this week.  We will advise them that a good number of us will be coming.

Photos

Walkers - please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link.  Preferably small size (around 450kb).  It has been great to receive a larger number of photos from PPs and SSs - keep them coming, please!

Wednesday's walks took in parts of Aotea.  This opening photo is from John Houghton and shows a stunning view on an equally stunning day:

The PPs appear very hale and hearty in this photo.  If it was taken at the end, and not the start, of their walk, then it appears that the walk was much too easy and the PPs should have been sent out for a second lap! smiley

The SSs were, once again, represented in large numbers.
(Thanks to John Holloway for this image.)

And Wednesday saw a large group of FFs also.
It is still a little off-putting to see Helen Paterson not wearing her orange cap!

Gary Dick led a select group of walkers on Friday - out along the south coast and up the hill to Sinclair Head. Obviously, quality over quantity ruled the day!
(Thanks again to Clint Davis for the following photos.)

And they made it to the bunker...
