Churton Park Community Walkers
Newsletter 29th June 2025
Last week:
It was a disappointing score this week for the home crowd, especially for the supporters who turned out in the rain on Wednesday: CPCW 0 - Weather 3. There is a rematch next week when we hope to reverse the score. Drinks this Friday, 5pm at the Johnsonville Club, will include the accommodation draw for those going to Somes Island in January. Excitement is already building to see who draws the Honeymoon Suite at the Caretaker's Cottage.

Walk Details for Wednesday 2nd July 2025
This Week's Walks: School holidays have started and for the next two Wednesdays we have assumed that traffic will be lighter and that we can head across town and arrive at the start line without major problems. So this week we are trying out a new area with all three walks starting at the Tanera Park carpark in Brooklyn. There are plenty of carparks which support the two football fields that are used in winter. The carparks are a little bit isolated and, whilst we do not see that this will be a problem, please make sure your vehicle is locked with no valuables on view. Access to the carpark area is easy if you use the following route: “Head up Brooklyn Road and at the first intersection on the right turn down into Ohiro Road. Then head down the hill and veer left into Tanera Road about 150m down the hill but stay parallel and close to Ohiro Road and you will end up at the carpark beside the two football fields. If you veer left a second time you will miss the entrance to the parking area.” A map of the route to the parking area is shown here.
These walks will start at 9:20am from the designated starting point which is Tanera Park carpark.
PPs: A 3.78km loop walk including a leg out and back from the loop. We have tried to avoid having to cross any major road apart from where the crossings are at traffic lights. The walk takes in Brooklyn’s War memorial. You can see the walk here.
SSs: A 4.28km loop walk mainly on streets. The walk may be a bit shorter than usual but this is made up with some reasonable rises. The walk takes in Brooklyn’s War memorial. You can see the walk here.
FFs: A 6.69km figure eight loop walk mainly keeping to streets with muddy wet tracks avoided, as are the crossing of busy streets apart from where these are supported by traffic lights. You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.
Parking: Parking for all three groups is in the Tanera Park carpark. See the directions and map that are set out above.
Coffee: As there are no local coffee bars that can take our numbers we have not made any reservations. Coffee will be walker's choice with Simmer and Thyme always an option back at home. There are also about three cafes in Brooklyn if walkers want to try the local brew.
Happy walking.

CPCW PHOTOS
Another frustrating Wednesday morning when you can't but feel sympathy for our Convenor, David, when he has to make a call on the weather. After two cancellations of Wednesday walks this month, there was an understandable reluctance to cancel again - and the forecast looked slightly encouraging! So the walk was on, but the vast majority of walkers made their own call to stay in bed. A hardy group of perhaps a dozen walkers turned up at Nairnville Park, got out of their cars and gathered, and then the skies opened again! Before getting too wet the decision was taken to adjourn for a coffee. Four Wednesdays in June 2025 - only one with a walk!

We scored a single photo this week - thanks to Rowena Rowe. She has titled her photo - "A few big drips (of rain) assisted in making the decision to abandon the walk."

|
You know that the weather is bad when the Thursday walkers do not venture forth!

And Friday's walk was cancelled too...
