Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 10 March 2024

Hi everyone

Last week’s walks.

The three Wednesday groups enjoyed good weather conditions for their walks around Titahi Bay (14 Pleasure Pacers – 4.6km; 32 Steady Steppers – 7.6 km; and 19 Fast Footers – 8.2 km).  On Thursday, 8 walkers journeyed through Trelissick Park in Ngaio, completing a distance of 6.8 km.  The Friday group went out to Queen Elizabeth II Park and walked a total of almost 15 kms in the surrounding area.

New Members.

We extend a warm welcome to new walkers who have joined our team at the CPCW in the last few weeks - Annie Chan, Sandy Dowling and Gordon Balfour - and we say farewell to Vince Joyce who is returning to England. We look forward to seeing Vince again next year.

A reminder about walking arrangements:

After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’.  Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group – please send them to both Bill Gaudie and Paul Alpe (and/or use our email address).

Finally, just a reminder to swap telephone numbers amongst those with whom you travel to the starting point each week. A handy back-up for any late changes to arrangements.

Brian Vincent.

Convenor.

Reminder:     Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Walk Details for Wednesday 13 March 2024.

This Week's Walks:  Last Wednesday walkers found their way to the designated start point very efficiently and the walks got away at the designated time.  This week we are out at Whitby where Andy has prepared two new walks - one each for the SSs and PPs.  The FFs will have to settle for an old walk.

It is about a 20 minute drive from Churton Park to our parking area.  We are hoping to get all the walks underway by 9:20am so if you are organising shared transport try to leave Churton Park by 8:55am or earlier.

PPs: A 4.05km loop walk taking in streets, paths and walkways.  The walk is undulating, but nowhere is it steep.   A new walk but in old territory.  You can see the walk here.

SSs:  A 7.21km loop.  There is one good climb in this walk, but the reward is great 360 degree views and a seat.  All on good tracks, walkways and footpaths and perhaps a bit of playing field.  Also a new walk but in old territory.  You can see the walk here.

FFs: An 8.00km loop walk taking in undulating streets that definitely includes a few hills. This is an old walk.  You can see the walk in NZMapometer here and on PlotaRoute here.

Parking: The meeting point and parking for all three groups is the Adventure Park carpark, off Discovery Drive (another one of our usual spots.)

Coffee:  Nothing is booked.  Andy, who created these walks, suggested GroundUp in Pauatahanui (they don’t take bookings).  There is also Columbus back in Porirua or you could shoot home on Transmission Gully and end up at Simmer Café.

Photos

Walkers - please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link.  Preferably small size (around 450kb).  It has been great to receive a larger number of photos from PPs and SSs - keep them coming, please!

Wednesday walkers trod along different circuits around Titahi Bay, with some paths crossing, albeit in different directions.
Here are a selection of photos with thanks to Paul Alpe, Mike Drain and Hue Ng:

Thursday's group of 8 walkers explored Trelissick Park and some of the surrounding streets of Crofton Downs.

And on Friday 13 walkers set off in two groups to explore the inland and coastal tracks through QEII Park as mapped by John Leonard.

And the answer to last week's poser...  Helen Paterson provided the only response - and they are the graffiti-covered gun emplacements on Point Halswell, down from the trig on the east side of the peninsula.
Well done, Helen - chocolate fish for you!
