Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter April 14th 2024

Last week’s walks:

Unfortunately, the rain was with us on Friday which brought about a cancellation of the intended walk.  Forecast rain also caused a cancellation of the walk on Thursday evening, however one keen walker managed a good walk.  Wednesday saw a large turn out for the walks at Pukerua Bay, including 26 FFs, 33 SSs and 14 FFs.

A reminder about walking arrangements:

After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’.  Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group – please send them to both Bill Gaudie and Paul Alpe (and/or use our email address).

Finally, just a reminder to swap telephone numbers amongst those with whom you travel to the starting point each week. A handy back-up for any late changes to arrangements.

Reminder:   Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Walk Details for Wednesday 17th April 2024.

This Week's Walks:  This week we are off to Melling/Harbour View, Lower Hutt.  Google says that the drive to Melling from Churton Park is 16 minutes, however as it is the end of the morning rush hour you may wish to allow a little extra time.  Those arranging rides from Churton Park should leave at or before 9:00am with walks to get away from the designated start point (parking) at 9:25am.  Any car-pooling that can be arranged would help with the parking near Melling Station. The SS and FF walks include hills, of course, but nothing too steep.  The PP walk is essentially flat and follows the western bank of the Hutt River.

PPs:  A 4.8km loop walk that follows the western bank of the Hutt River heading north to the Kennedy Good Bridge, through the underpass and then back on footpaths following SH2 to the Tirohanga intersection where traffic lights allow you to cross the roads back to the cars.  All on good quality tracks and footpaths. There are various opportunities to shorten the walk if you wish. You can see the walk here.

SSs:   A 5.7km loop taking in streets and tracks in Harbour View.  The walk is on footpaths and tracks.  (The walk can, if required, be shortened using Vermont Drive).  You can see the walk here.

FFs: A 6.8km loop taking in the streets and tracks of Harbour View.  You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on PlotaRoute here.

Parking: Heading north on SH2 towards the Melling interchange, take the right-hand of the two north-bound lanes and head through the traffic lights at the Melling interchange and then, at the second set of traffic lights, move right into the right turning lane and head into Block Road.  There is parking available in various parking areas off Block Road and around Melling Station, and also on Block Road itself.

Coffee:  Columbus @ Mitre 10 Mega in Petone is the choice for coffee this week.  We will advise them that a good number of us will be coming.

Photos

Walkers - please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link.  Preferably small size (around 450kb).  It has been great to receive a larger number of photos from PPs and SSs - keep them coming, please!

CPCW Photos

Wednesday's walks wandered around Pukerua Bay - always a great place for stunning views.
Here are the SSs - all 33 of them! - with Kapiti Island in the background and another image with a slightly different perspective!

And the FFs were also out in good numbers - 26 in total (though some are obscured in the following photo) - thanks to Hue Ng for this photo.  The second photo shows a select group of FFs with honorary mascot, Red. (Photo - Bill Gaudie.)

14 PPs also enjoyed the fine day walking around Pukerua Bay.
(Thanks to Mike Drain for the photo below.)

And, sadly, there are no photos from Thursday night or Friday evening - walks cancelled due to the weather.
