Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter May 19th 2024

Last week’s walks.

Those who went out on last Wednesday’s walks managed to dodge the rain and enjoyed a good walk out from the turbine in Brooklyn and return. There were 3 Pleasure Pacers and 13 Steady Steppers (who walked the same distance as the 20 Fast Footers along the same track but in the reverse direction).  Five Thursday walkers (plus Red) journeyed around Johnsonville and on Friday there were 20 walkers who ventured from the eastern end of Bothamley Park, including Ascot Park and the surrounding area.

Scams.

It seems that there has been an increase in scam emails recently, including those received by some members that ask if the recipient is free at the moment.  We suggest caution if you think about answering such vague messages and it is wise to check their actual email address before deciding to reply.

A reminder about walking arrangements:

After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’.  Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group.  Please forward these by email.

Finally, just a reminder to swap telephone numbers amongst those with whom you travel to the starting point each week. A handy back-up for any late changes to arrangements.

Reminder:   Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Walk Details for Wednesday May 22nd 2024.

This Week's Walks:  Last week we did go ahead with the walks in and around the Brooklyn Wind Turbine despite the forecast.  It was well worthwhile - we all had a decent walk with no wind and when the rain came, as it was meant to, it was just a light drizzle.

Every now and then we have a local walk and this is what is proposed this week with all three walks utilising the streets, tracks and walkways that are spread around Churton Park.  Hopefully some of you may find a walkway that you haven’t used before as a result of these walks.  All walks start and finish at New World carpark.  Walks will commence at 9:00am.

PPs:  A 4.42km loop walk with only gentle hills.  You can see the walk here

SSs:  A 6.21km loop walk with one hill of note, otherwise fairly normal grades for Churton Park. You can see the walk here

FFs:  A 7.26km loop walk - again, one hill of note and a couple of others as well. You can see the walk here on MapoMeter and on Plotaroute here

Parking:  Obviously parking is in the New World carpark.  To keep New World happy please park at the south end, preferably in the back rows, or on the road.

Coffee:  We will warn Simmer that a good number of walkers will be calling in for coffee.  Hopefully the timing of the walks may spread us out a bit.  Simmer generally cope fairly well with our numbers.  (Also there is Thyme just down the road.)

Website

When you open the website to view your walk have a quick look at the Home Page  This usually has new images each week showing views from one of our walks.

Cancellation

If the walks are cancelled an email will be sent out as early as possible but definitely before 8:00am.

Photos

Walkers - please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link.  Preferably small size (around 450kb).  It has been great to receive a larger number of photos from PPs and SSs - keep them coming, please!

Wednesday's walks took us up to the Brooklyn Wind Turbine and then along various routes along the hills - stunning views over and around Wellington and beyond.

Thanks to Paul Alpe for these two photos:

And another photo from Paul:                                                                And one from Hue Ng of the FFs:

On Friday the walkers were led out by Clint Davis on a 12.2km walk from Bothamley Park, Porirua, and through various streets, tracks and by-ways.  The path through Bothamley Park took us past the many groups of painted stones, grouped around various themes.  This photo of the later group was provided by Gay Hoffman:

And there is always some mischief to be had on a Friday walk.  Here are two photos absolutely ready for submissions for another Photo Caption Competition.  So don your thinking caps and send your suggestions to the Editor

I have expressed my concerns to Wendy Bentley about the amount of time she spends trolling for humour on the internet!  Not sure quite why she thought this one might be appropriate to send to me - or why my sister sent me the second one!  It is probably "Pick on Editor Week"!! (Same concerns must be expressed to my sister for her time spent seeking internet humour.)  CPCW is grateful to them both!!
