Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 7th September 2025

Last week:

Wednesday's walk went ahead as scheduled with 6 PPs, 28 SSs and 19 FFs striding out around Porirua.  The walk included the new development on Kenepuru Landing where some of our members are now resident.  On Thursday evening there were six walkers (+Red) who headed out around Johnsonville and Churton Park.  Friday's weather saw the scheduled walk cancelled, but a hardy group of six decided to venture out on some of the tracks and streets of Churton Park.  The week was rounded out with a sizeable gathering at the Johnsonville Club on Friday evening for drinks, food and conversation.

Walk Details for Wednesday 10th September 2025

This Week's Walks: We move to Porirua this coming Wednesday with the SSs and the FFs doing an old walk that takes in Bothamley Park.  Trying to keep all the parking together means that the PPs get a walk that takes in the new streets of Aotea, but does not reach Bothamley Park.

The SS group and, to a lesser extent the FF group, do allow for a variation in pace.  We leave it to each group to organise themselves with some walkers preferring a slightly faster pace and others preferring to take it a bit slower.  We encourage as many as possible to download the route from the website and to follow the route on your phone so you know where you are going.  A bit of patience from those at the front of each group helps to keep people together.  Bill and Clint are happy to provide some tech assistance if required.

The walks will start at 9:20am from the designated starting point.

PPs:  A 4.41 km loop.  It takes in a loop of the gardens in the grounds of Gear Homestead and through Adrenaline Forest before heading along some of the newer streets of Aotea and then down to a track that returns walkers to their cars.   Flattish walk, but there are a still a couple of uphill bits.  You can see the walk here.

SSs:  A 5.26 km loop that heads off using part of the Te Araroa Trail before heading to Bothamley Park.  The tracks then take walkers back to the Aotea streets and on to your cars.  The walk is an old walk and the map does not show the minor variations in the track that may have occurred following recent work in the park. These variations should be obvious and not create any navigation problems.  A mixture of footpaths and good quality tracks and, of course, some uphill.  You can see the walk here.

FFs:  A 7.98 km loop, also on footpaths and good quality tracks.  It includes the track through Bothamley Park.  You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.

Parking:  Parking for all three groups is on both sides of Okowai Road opposite Adrenalin Forest and Gear Homestead.  We will need to spread out along the roadside.

Coffee:   Coffee for all three groups is, once again, at Columbus Coffee in Mitre 10 Mega, Porirua.  They will be notified that a number of us will be calling in for coffee and perhaps a snack.

Happy walking.

CPCW PHOTOS

Walkers on Wednesday headed out in various directions from Rahia Street in Porirua.  Rowena Rowe caught the whole group before they headed out in different directions.  She also captured the SSs en masse and striding forth.  Janet Tyson provided the photo of the second SS group.

The PPs were well photographed this week with images submitted by Keith Thomas and Rowena Rowe:

Talk to any member of the SSs or PPs and you are likely to have doubts expressed about the sanity of the FFs.  Well-founded those doubts might be - this week saw a couple of FFs heading down the entrance to the Regional Forensic Service.  Not sure whether they would have been welcomed or barred!  The image of the group, later in the walk beside Porirua Harbour, was taken by Bill Gaudie.

Thanks to Gillian Mills for this week's photo of the Thursday walkers.  Looks like they may have been enjoying their second (or third...?) childhood!

Friday's walk in Spicer Forest was cancelled due to the strong wind warning and rain.  Just as well as there were trees felled as shown in these images taken the following day by Gay Hoffman.  However, a group of intrepid Friday walkers did venture out around Churton Park.  They were caught in a sheltered spot by Russell Paterson and in a not-so-sheltered spot by Clint Davis!
