Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 31 March 2024

Last week’s walks:

Notwithstanding some windy weather on Wednesday and cool temperatures during the week, we had all groups out and about once more.  On Wednesday the 3 Pleasure Pacers, 20 Steady Steppers and 18 Fast Footers went around Churton Park, as did the 3 Thursday evening walkers.  The Friday team comprised 18 walkers who ventured around the Trelissick Park and Otari/Wilton area for their walk.

Next Friday 5 April:

Yes, it is that time again when we can all get together for a chat and a meal and a drink at the Sprig and Fern in Tawa.   Plan to get there by 5pm – see you there!

A reminder about walking arrangements:

After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’.  Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group – please send them to both Bill Gaudie and Paul Alpe (and/or use our email address).

Finally, just a reminder to swap telephone numbers amongst those with whom you travel to the starting point each week. A handy back-up for any late changes to arrangements.

Reminder:   Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Walk Details for Wednesday April 3rd 2024:

This Week's Walks:  This week we are off to Aotea.  Usually we include Bothamley Park as part of our Aotea walks, but there is continuing construction work being carried out in the Park at this time.  So the usual walks have been left in the database and three new walks have been created for the coming Wednesday. All walks include some sort of hill, but nothing too steep.

PP’s:  A  3.92km walk that contains a loop around the pond and a loop around the streets with a look at Adrenalin Forest on the way past.  A minor hill is included, but not too steep.  You can see the walk here.

SS’s:   A 5.92km loop taking in the streets and tracks of both Aotea and Papakowhai.  The walk does include some typical residential hills, but nothing too steep. You can see the walk here.

FF’s:  A 7.88km loop taking in the streets and tracks of both Aotea and Papakowhai.  As always the walk does include several hills.  You can see the walk here and on PlotaRoute  here.

Parking: Just north of Porirua take the right hand lane and turn into Whitford Brown Avenue and only a short distance up this avenue turn left into Papakowhai Road and immediately start looking for a park.  Papakowhai Road is a long street with no houses on one side so there should be plenty of parking for all.

Coffee:  Where else in Porirua would we go as a large group but Columbus Coffee in Mitre 10 Mega.  We will advise them that a good number of us will be coming.

Walkers - please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link.  Preferably small size (around 450kb).  It has been great to receive a larger number of photos from PPs and SSs - keep them coming, please!

Wednesday's walkers in and around Churton Park:

First up, the FFs striding forth from Churton Park New World looking as if they are about to conquer the old world.  And then, having worn themselves out, they take a rest in John Walker Park where they are about to enter their second childhood.

Good Friday's walkers, out on a walk mapped by Clint Davis, who kindly provided these photos.  Clint suggested the second photo shows the living amongst the dead, but given the speed of some Friday walkers perhaps "The Quick and the Dead" may be more apt!
