Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter May 5th 2024

Last week’s walks:

Last Wednesday there was another excellent turnout of walkers for the routes around Whitby.  There were 7 Pleasure Pacers, 26 Steady Steppers and 19 Fast Footers.  On Thursday 7 walkers and Red completed a 6.7km walk in Tawa and on Friday 14 walkers left from Seton Nossiter Park to walk through Horokiwi and Newlands.  The week was completed with 25 enjoying the hospitality of Sprig and Fern on Friday evening.

Finally a reminder to pencil into your diaries that our annual mid-year function will be held on 27 July at the Johnsonville Bowling Club.

A reminder about walking arrangements:

After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’.  Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group.  Please forward these by email.

Finally, just a reminder to swap telephone numbers amongst those with whom you travel to the starting point each week. A handy back-up for any late changes to arrangements.

Reminder:   Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Walk Details for Wednesday May 8th 2024.

This Week's Walks:

This week our walks are in and around Crofton Downs, Chartwell and Wilton Bush.  They are all walks which we have enjoyed previously.  Google suggests travelling time from Churton Park is about 16 minutes, but bear in mind that this is a school day and you will need to contend with the Onslow College students crossing the Raroa pedestrian crossing in ones and twos!  Allow travel time to arrive at the starting point of your walk at 9.20am (starting point varies depending upon your group - as does parking).  Try to ensure that you have a contact number for others in your group so that you can call if you get held up in traffic.

PPs:  A 3.5km loop walk through Wilton Bush, up through Otari Reserve and then back along the road to your cars.  There is a bit of a climb up through Otari Reserve.  Parking at the entrance to Wilton Bush - heading south on Churchill Drive turn right into Wilton Bush Road just past Blackridge Road.  You can see the walk here

SSs:   A 6.2km loop walk on the streets and some paths around Chartwell, Crofton Downs and Ngaio.  A few ups and downs, but there are various points on the walk where you can shorten the walk if you wish.  Parking in and around Chartwell Drive (turn right off Churchill Drive just past the Crofton Downs shops) near the Crofton Downs School.  You can see the walk here

FFs:  A 7.0km loop which follows paths and streets through Crofton Downs and Ngaio and back to Chartwell.  Includes the Silversky Track and tracks through Huntleigh Park.  Parking at the top of Chartwell Drive beyond the intersection with John Wilton Drive.  You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on PlotaRoute here

Parking:  See instructions for each group in the outlines of the walks above.

Coffee:  We will advise Simmer, back in Churton Park, that a number of us will be returning for coffee.  However, you may choose a cafĂ© closer to the walk.

Walkers - please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link.  Preferably small size (around 450kb).  It has been great to receive a larger number of photos from PPs and SSs - keep them coming, please!

Weather for the Wednesday walks in Whitby threatened drizzle, but this did not eventuate and a good group of walkers enjoyed various routes drawn up by Andy Dunn.
